Object: OT: Effective Protest Slogans?
Greetings all,
I'm going to be going to NYC for the Republican convention and I've been
trying to think of effective protest slogans. I'm open to suggestions.
When I marched in Dallas before the Iraq invasion my sign read "Just Say No
to Warmongering Fascist Chickenhawks" which I thought was reasonably
effective with it's humorous take on Nancy Reagan's anti-drug slogan (a
metaphor that works on at least two levels) and it's somewhat outrageous
(but defendable) ad hominems. Problem: the sign had to be huge in order to
be legible from any distance at all. The Dallas march was a rather static
affair with a fixed route and a rally point. I expect the action in New
York to be much more fluid and I need to be as mobile as possible (I'm also
going to be a street medic so I have a lot of stuff to carry for that role
as well.) I'm not going to attend the United for Peace and Justice march on
the 29th (which I fear may have been neutered by the NYC mayor's office).
I'm going to be taking part in the more fluid (and probably chaotic) street
events on August 30th to September 2nd.
So, what are good slogans that are really short and concise and, maybe,
possibly, could jar a thought into someone's head? I've thought about going
positive rather than negative and I'm leaning towards stuff like
"Republicans! Take Your Party Back!" superimposed over the face of Jerry
Falwell, Pat Robertson, G.W. Bush, etc. Any suggestions?

Cool. I'll probably mention those on my website when I get it built. If
I'm not mistaken I've heard all of those before so they're 'public domain'
right?

Of course! It was Reagan who made the "Are you better off
than you were four years ago?" famous.
The "Do you feel safer now than you did four years ago?" is
a wakeup call. I mean, are the Republicans pretending that
terrorism was only invented in 2001? Maybe, terrorism
existed but all the terrorist loved us and never thought about
attacking us?
No. Of course not.

Maybe just a simple "Family Values" in a 60's hippie font would send an
effective message. Tell 'em they don't have a monopoly on 'em, and the
hippie font should convey the impression of family values outside the
"helvetica 9-to-5 corporate republican straight-laced" world.

"A Thousand Lights Points Of Life" with a flag-draped coffin,
in reference to the slogan of Shrub's old man.
"Abu GOP" Short and not very sweet, but oh, so à propos.
"Vietnam - one war lost, two presidents.
Iraq and Afghanistan - two wars lost..."
"Rock the chickenhawk." Write "vote", but cross it out.
"He's a Major-League *****", with the symbol of the Texas
Rangers baseball team.
"Fermé Lay Bush". Fermé is French for "close", and the French
phrase "fermé la bouche" means "shut your mouth". Of course,
most GOPers won't get the joke, but still....

Hey, those are great. Thanks.
My website will be up in one to two weeks and I'll probably post the article

the web. Judging by the response to this post, I should get some really
good critical feedback.

Well good luck. I read a story yesterday (can't seem to find it now)
about a guy who was protesting a Bush speech in Philly. He was in the
designated protest area with his sign. The cops told him he had to
keep moving, he couldn't just stand there, so he marched around in a
circle. That didn't satisfy the cops so the beat him up and arrested
him. The told him he didn't deserve to see the president and wouldn't
made him duck his head or something when a limo drove by. Then they
threw him in jail and wrote on the report that his victim was
"society". So the Gestapo is alive and well. Good luck not getting
worked over.
