Ahhhhhhhh, NAVY!!!!! run away..........
I thought I would never, ever, ever, in a million years, have to walk
down the pier where I used to be moored when stationed on that
aircraft carrier. Alas, today I had to trudge that old path.
Luckily, in this life I also get to walk away. It wasn't a regular
Navy ship but man all them uniforms all over the base!! Shudder.

The Norfolk, VA. D&S piers were fully replaced since my time in the
canoe club. It was quite strange, a couple years ago, to be standing
in an outdoor cargo storage area by the dry dock there where I used to
park my car when the Destroyer I was crew on was in port.

"Atheism is the world of reality, it is reason, it is freedom. Atheism is human
concern, and intellectual honesty to a degree that the religious mind cannot
begin to understand. And yet it is more than this. Atheism is not an old
religion, it is not a new and coming religion, in fact it is not, and never has
been, a religion at all. The definition of Atheism is magnificent in its
simplicity: Atheism is merely the bed-rock of sanity in a world of madness."

Well, pier sentry at 0200 in february is a bad memory along with the
time we had to replace the fathometer transducer, bottom of a shaft,
hung over, pounding on the hull with a wrench so the divers could find

nice in the winter, even compared with someplace further from Martian

I have been under the impression for many years that I lived through
the experience. It could just be the delusions from inhaling jet fuel
for 8 straight hours, along with the pre-mixture, residing in my
bloodstream. Alas, cut with liberal amounts of lager later that night
all was well.

Where're you from, Florida? Norfolk does NOT get cold. People
totally freak, if it snows enough for any of it to stick....I mean,
they run in droves to the stores, like they're going to have to sit
out a month-long blizzard, or something.
I grew up in Michigan. If you think Norfolk does not get cold then
more power to you. I, however, spent many a night standing on the
pier or quarterdeck and in January/February it gets damn cold.
Last week wasn't the coldest I have ever seen it but after standing on
a steel deck, with the temperature in the 30's, and with the wind
being funneled into a tunnel where we were working, well, at the end
of the day it was fucking cold.

I don't know that I ever actually smelled that stuff....but I'm quite
sure I'd hate to breath it with a hangover. See, you shoulda gotten a
better rating....I was a PN, myself....heh, battlestation just outside
the captain's quarters.
I was an ET. Spent most of my time in climate controlled rooms
waiting for equipment to break. I loved the repair locker. #1 nozzle
man, fire team trainer, fun, fun, fun...........

Funny ... I remember that there were a lot of bad memories but, aside
from the stay hospital-side, I can't remember any.
Well, pier sentry at 0200 in february is a bad memory along with the
time we had to replace the fathometer transducer, bottom of a shaft,
hung over, pounding on the hull with a wrench so the divers could find
the spot....... ugh

Bug juice isn't supposed to cause hangovers. (Never did with me.)

Never got a hangover from bug juice as I never drank the stuff.

The hangovers were the occasional reprecussion from being on the
beach.
Orange bug juice is dynamite at cleaning grease off engine room deck
plates.
For the enlightenment on non-military. "Bug Juice" is unsweetened
Kool-Aid(tm) which comes in large packets good for making 5 gallons.
The orange was really really rank and so it was often put to use in
more humane ways.

Wrong bug juice. I was referring to the 200 proof stuff in sick bay.

Ah. Well, some crewmembers did have access to the 191.

That's the 200 after you open it. (That's why alcohol is used for
drying - it sucks water out of even desert air.)

This stuff was marked 191 on the gallon can. It was used to clean the
boilers. Pure grain alcohol, iirc.
