With all the noise these days about Iraq and terrorists, it's nice to
remember some folks doing a big job for a different reason.
This Saturday, August 4th is the 217th birthday of the U. S. Coast
Guard. They may not be the biggest, most popular, or have the flashy toys.
But they do a hell of a job.

Unfortunately, he didn't forget about them. They are there, protecting
oil rigs and ports.
One Coastie has been killed in an attack on a rig. So far, that's the
only one. IIRC it some two years ago. I'll see if I can find the
article on military.com
And back here, they got sucked into that boondoggle called The
Department of Homeland Security. Now their trapped.
Things were so much simpler under Lizzy Dole and the Department of
Transportation. Oh well. They say change is good, but......

I hate to tell you this, Mickey, but the Coast Guard is over in Iraq:

And guess what they're guarding? Oil terminals. Figures.

The next time a member of the rest of the services tell you how tough they
are, ask them to go swimming with a Coast Guard rescue swimmer and they do
it to save lives, not take them.
Even though I missed the escalation in Viet Nam (I got out in Oct of 1965) I
often wished I would have joined the CG rather than getting drafted.

Mid 1970s. Summer job: deckhand on the worst tub I'd ever seen. Four
miles out from Oregon Inlet, NC Outer Banks. Propshaft loses bearing,
killing the engine and twisting the transom so bad we're taking on
water. Good thing we had a radio.

You just reminded me that my father was in the
Coast Guard for two years and was about to sign
up again when the Army drafted him. A couple
years later, after guarding German prisoners
down South for a couple years, he had one boot
on a ship heading to the Asian theater when he
was suddenly sent home. My mother had come
down with whooping cough, and they thought
she was going to die. By the time she recovered,
the war was over. In my brother's case, he had
been in ROTC when he was in college. He signed
up with the Air Force as an officer at the same
time the Army tried to draft him. The Air Force
won, but he had to sign up for five years as an
officer as opposed to the two years as an enlisted
man with the Army.
