OT--*insert screaming sound here* |
I hate migraines. Especially "woke up on my day off with a migraine"
migraines.
Thank Dave for Wendy's (a fast-food restaurant for you non-Yanks); one
Frosty (a sort of chocolate milkshake) later, the worst of the symptoms
have subsided--and four hours after waking up, I can tolerate sound and
some light again...but I spent the first 2 of those hours wishing the guy
with the tourniquet around my head would stop twisting, and the other guy
with the wire brushes in back of my eyes could stop, too, and I wouldn't
mind at all.

Bitabutal and ergotamine. Those were the only things that touched mine. (Of
course what I had were known as "cluster headaches, 2 to 8 of them each and
every day. I think it was the Mexican hot sauce that finally did them in.)

Ibuprofen helps some with the pain, but not the light/sound sensitivity.
Super-megadoses (400 mg/day) of vitamin B-2 (riboflavin) are alleged to
help too, but I've been trying that for two weeks now with not much
respite from the headaches.

I never remember what I've tried, for the next time...maybe I should try
adding stuff like these replies to my PDA (which I can't look at when I'm
migraine-infested). Thanks for the ideas.

The best over-the-counter remedy is ibuprofen taken ASAP (per my doctor's
office). The problem with waking up with a migraine is that you are already
into them pretty far.
I've had two migraines which started during the day with an aura. The first one I
didn't know what was happening. The second time, I called my doctor and got the
ibuprofen recommendation (I'd already popped some Tylenol, which I knew was
fairly futile). The headache was mostly derailed. Still had the light sensitivity
and what I might call muzzy feeling. (I too, got myself a chocolate milkshake
a couple of hours on that seemed quite beneficial.)
I seem to recall that there is some sort of injectible drug that can abort a migraine
if given early enough. (My migraines are fairly rare, and often associated with a
prolonged change in altitude.)

That's two or three recommendations for ibuprofen, now--it'll be the next
one I try *g*

Frosty (a sort of chocolate milkshake) later, the worst of the
symptoms have subsided--and four hours after waking up, I can tolerate
sound and some light again...but I spent the first 2 of those hours
wishing the guy with the tourniquet around my head would stop
twisting, and the other guy with the wire brushes in back of my eyes
could stop, too, and I wouldn't mind at all.
My sympathies, Doc. I used to get migraines and it was a *****. Hope
you feel better soon.
Thanks; what sort of remedies did you get any results from? Regular aspirin
and Acetamenaphin won't touch it. I could always just go back to bed, but I
don't want to ***** away a perfectly good weekend sleeping it off!
Caffeine Doc. Lot's of it too.
Excedrin Migraine and coffee work for me. I have an Rx for Ralpax, but
I don't use it unless the other does not work.
According to my doctor, migraine's are caused by to much dilation of the
blood vessels in and around the brain. Any thing that will tighten up
those blood vessels will help.

Yes, but that adversely affects other things. And I hate being cold.
Also, you can't stay in there for ever, think of the water bill. But
hey, if it works for you, far be it from me to tell you not to.
Migraine's, like religion, is a very personal thing. Both are a right
royal pain, and cures vary from person to person.

Basically nothing cut the pain. I usually just lay down in a dark
room and bit my pillow. Luckily I haven't had a migraine for the last
27 years. Have you tried naproxen sodium otherwise known as naprosin
or OTC as Aleve? It wasn't available when I was having migraines, but
it works for me on other types of pain when acetaminophen or ibuprofen
do nothing.

I can't remember trying Aleve. I would have darkened the room and tried
sleeping it off, but I wanted to go out, enjoy my day off...the flea market
looked pretty interesting, with all the extra lighting and enhanced 5.1
audio ;)
....then there was the 35 minutes I spent in the barber shop...when it was
my turn I could see myself in the full-wall mirror on the opposite wall,
and I looked confused and more than slightly tense. Could be because the
trimmers the barber was using were jet-powered and loud as hell (no one
else seemed to hear it. They were obviously deaf!)
....and, finally, came my stop at Krystal (I crave chili cheese fries when I
get a migraine), where I could hardly hear the chick through the drive-
through speakers, but the red-and-white decor of the building blazed like a
phosphorus explosion in my retinas.
Who needs drugs, when a migraine makes things so vivid? *g*

Try a really dark, quiet room. Lie on your back with your head
elevated an inch or so. Cold compresses on both temples. It would
help if there were someone to change the compresses every few minutes,
or if you wrapped ice in a hand towel as a compress. The cold causes
the blood vessels to shrink. You know what the dark and quiet do. A
white noise generator turned down low might also help mask noise.
(One of those "waves at the seashore" things.)
I never had the "pleasure", but my second wife did, and the cold
compresses helped her. (Tylenol 4s [about 2 or 3 at a time, taken
with a few aspirin] helped too, but that's addiction country.)

Dark & quiet work well, but I end up tossing & turning when I lie down--no
matter how I lie, it hurts where the pillow is, either side, back,
front...can't even drape something over my eyes to block the light; even
very light weight on my nose makes the headache worse.
The worst thing about it all is the inaction. If I don't want to be still,
or have things I want to do, just lying there is as bad as the headache :/

With falling water? That'll block some sound. As long as there's a
constant background sound, the brain tends to ignore little sounds we
normally notice.

can I nor would I want to conceive of an individual that survives
its physical death; let feeble souls, from fear or absurd egotism,
cherish such thoughts. I am satisfied with the mystery of the eter-

twisting, and the other guy with the wire brushes in back of my eyes
could stop, too, and I wouldn't mind at all.
I've heard that midol can help at times - it has a muscle relaxant in
it. Sometimes migranes are caused by muscle tension.
I had a lulu of a migrane once after spending all afternoon in the
pool cleaning the bottom. The neurologist said it was caused by
squinting all day.
