London: Taking the law in her own hands, a Spanish mother set afire a
man who raped her teenaged daughter and allegedly taunted her about
the assault, a report here said today.
The rapist Antonio Cosme Velasco Soriano, who later succumbed to
injuries, had been sent to jail for nine years in 1998, but was let
out on a three-day pass and returned to his home town of Benejuzar, 50
km south of Alicante, on the Costa Blanca.
While there, he passed his victim's mother in the street and allegedly
taunted her about the attack. He is said to have called out: "How's
your daughter?" before heading into a crowded bar, The Sunday
Telegraph reported today.
Shortly after, the woman walked into the bar, poured a bottle of
petrol over Soriano and lit a match. She watched as the flames
engulfed him, before walking out.
The woman fled to Alicante, where she was arrested the same evening.
When she appeared in court the next day in the town of Orihuela, she
was cheered and clapped by a crowd, who shouted "Bravo!" and "Well
done!" the newspaper reported.
A judge ordered her to be held in prison and undergo psychiatric
tests, provoking anger from friends and neighbours, who have set up a
petition calling for her release.
Soriano suffered 60 per cent burns in the attack on June 13 and later
succumbed to injuries

I can be wrong of course. But you mention medical science. I know a
tiny bit of medical science after spending thirty years doing medical
research (admittedly not in sexual physiology but in protein
biochemistry). What I said was my understanding of the physiology of

My initial question was how can an erection happen if the body is
flooded with adrenaline in a fight/flight physiological state. This
state is controlled by the sympathetic nervous system. This system is
also responsible for ejaculation and the withdrawal of the erection. In
order to get an erection in the first place you need the
parasympathetic system (seretonin) to work its magic.
Getting back to the subject of the discussion:
The male in question may have been coerced to have sex using a knife,
however he must have been calm enough to be able to get an erection.

state of the subject. It's a purely automatic response.

Wrong. Among other things, stimulating the prostate can cause an
AUTOMATIC response.

Or held there long enough to have the effects of the adrenalin wear off or

At least he went to jail. The number of people that even go to trial in
America is very low and the conviction rate is low unless it's horrific.
(Being raped on a city street with people walking by and ignoring what is
happening is *NOT* enough to go to trial on.)
It puts the victim on trial.
If other crimes where treated the way rape is, the defense would argue that
the bank robber should be found innocent because everybody withdrew money
from it.

Rape is bad violence and should be treated as such, NO MORE and NO
LESS. Why is it that when we come to an issue that involves anything
even remotely related to sex we all dreadfully over react? Is it that
somehow the religious anti sex doctrines effect our rational thinking?

and see what frequently happens. The statistics are out there and if you
have a guest speaker who is an assistant DA she will also verify that
information.

Because it is FAR MORE. Most people can get over being beat up with little

Not everyone. There are many who need ongoing support afterwards!
Rape is something few ever get over.
This is the core of the problem. Why is it that the sometimes
relatively mild injury causes such a serious mental trauma?
The causes of rape are any combination of the following:
Dominance
Violence
Ignorance
Insensitivity
Intoxication
Punishment
Hate
Vengeance
Please notice that I did not add desire for sex to this list!
What is the victim most concerned about:
Sexual humiliation and feeling of guilt!
Even the physical injuries do not matter as much!
Tell me then, what is the first step we ought to do in our society to
lessen human suffering of this nature?
We want people accused of rape to face the same treatment that any other
criminal does. They do not.
The more people you lock up (or execute) the more violence you cause!
I will not draw a conclusion here, I let you do it yourself.
But to stay on topic in alt.atheism:
I intend to point out the religious obscession with human sexuality:
The over-emphasis of sexuality as something inappropriate, the feeling
of guilt, tabus and shame, the ascetic human ideal, etc, etc., etc.

I am not much in favour of using any mind control regardless of being
in origin human, supernatural or alien technology!
