Alter: A Shabby Fiesta of Hypocrisy

We're supersizing the 'H' factor: a 'family entertainment' company
peddling casual sex, then 'apologizing' all the way to the bank

Newsweek
Nov. 29 issue - You would think we'd have more important things to
argue about than whether Nicollette Sheridan's dropped towel and lame
come-hither banter with Philadelphia Eagles star Terrell Owens
belonged in ABC's "Monday Night Football" pregame show. But this
little fiesta of hypocrisy, cynicism and fear may tell us something
about where the country is right now, and even about why John Kerry
lost. First, the good news. If this had happened 20 years ago (and it
could have; TV was full of sexual innuendo then, too), all the talk
would have been about the interracial coupling of Sheridan and Owens.
This time, the hottest of hot buttons in American history—the source
of countless lynchings—caused barely a public peep, though the subtext
may be part of what's powering it around the water cooler.
