Object: OT: Silly question about cellular ring tones
Does a cellular phone ring tone have to be musical, or can any sound
file be converted? For example, can a phone ring by saying, "Hey,
stupid, answer me?"
I've never owned a cell phone and have only used one or two in my
life, so no jokes about what a stupid question this is, please.

You can actually record your own ringer. My husband did that unbeknownst to
me and while I was at work, I suddenly heard his voice screaming at me to
pick up my goddamned phone. Nice laugh at my expense ;)

Yes. There are even applications for making ring tones, both
personal & commercial versions.
The CIA is even experimenting on the use of ring tones as
a torture device... assuming that my room mate is a covert
CIA agent. At various times I have been subjected to
everything from the South Park underwear gnomes to "Ann"
character on the BBC's "Little Britian" comedy show.
(So is it just me, or does anyone else feel that Tom Baker
should be able to get a better gig than that?)
Anyhow, I suggest you check first with your cell phone
company, and if that doesn't help try Google.

You can convert anything into an MP3 if you have the right
hardware/software. I use 'Ringtone Ripper' from Planet Ringtone. Try
this link -
http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Best/ringtone-ripper.html
I also use BitPim to sync all my files. (http://www.bitpim.org/)

Thanks. I have a great mp3 converter, but my problem was I didn't know
if phones could play mp3s or if there was a proprietary format for ring
tones. I wanted to have a little fun and just didn't know if my sound
files could be made to work.

If I remember correctly, there are some utilities that can
change wavs or mp3s or others sound files to the format
used by cell phones. Any sound can be made into a ringtone.
You could do that. Microphone to soundcard to mp3,
to ring tone. Thing to be careful of is converting
music and passing the tones around, the bastids who
own the music apparently sue a lot.
Apparently phones have had very limited memory so
the special phone format sounds pretty bad.
Apparently some more modern phones can do mp3s
directly now.
I was in a store a few weeks ago when some guy's phone
went off, he had a barking German shephard ring tone.
Right obnoxious!

Pretty much any sound can be used. The problem is the phone companies go
out of their way to make it hard for you do any such thing on your own.
They want you to rent (not buy mind you) ring sounds.

While I was poking around last night, I kept coming across sites that
offer "20 Free Sci-Fi Ring Tones!" and stuff like that, but I had no way
of listening to them to see if they were theme music or quotes. There
are a ton of sites that claim to have freebies. How can a phone company
get away with charging rent for one?

Be careful of the "freebie" sites. They want *something. Most likely,
they're spam traps since the way you get the ring tone is give them your
phone number.
Phone companies get away with it because people put up with it. I've had
all of two phones in five years, finally upgrading my phone because the
other was just getting old. This one can do all the pictures and sounds
and games and crap. But when I looked at the terms, they carried
"licenses." Even a picture background kind of thing "expires" in a term
usually 90 days.
So I shut the "picture" service off and never went back.
Then poked around until I figured out how its done and figured out a way
to do it myself without paying anybody. Then lost interest. <g>
But one thing I found out is that the phone companies don't do anything
standard and won't provide specs without a licensing agreement in which
you give them wheelbarrows of money. So the few brave folks out there that
do play around run the risk of corrupting their software and rendering the
phone inoperative (they even warn you about this, that if you twiddle with
the Wrong Thing, you'll have a useless phone).
There are users groups out there that figure this all out but you have to
poke around to find them. And you have to steer clear of the FREE!
RINGTONES! bunch. They're up to something.
I dunno. It's a serious cash cow for the cell phone companies and people
are willing to pay for a picture or a sound that "expires" in three months
or so. Why, I have *no idea...

I noticed and sort of wondered about that. Don't you get charged for
incoming calls? If so, it seems silly to give a stranger your number.

Yep, it burns up your minutes. Though some providers are starting to
provide free incoming calls.
What's worse is I hear text message spam is on the rise. And some plans
you get charged for every message inbound or outbound.

Phone companies get away with it because people put up with it. I've had
all of two phones in five years, finally upgrading my phone because the
other was just getting old. This one can do all the pictures and sounds
and games and crap. But when I looked at the terms, they carried

I thought you were going to say there's some esoteric clause in the
service contract or something. Instead, it's just plain brainless
consumerism?

Yep, it's the latter. They don't stop anybody that's techie enough to do
it. They don't provide specs to help you but don't sue you or something if
you do. They know most people won't pay attention and won't bother,
they'll just do the clicky-clicky-download and think they're all cool and
stuff.
My provider, Sprint, which is otherwise a good carrier and I've been with
them five years this year, doesn't carry data cables for their phones. You
can find them. I bought one on Amazon from a bunch called "Wireless
Emporium" which appears to carry everything that ever existed for a cell
phone.
Then you have to go find instructions on how to do it or track down the
software and such. Most people just won't bother.
I see somebody else mention Bitpim. I'd forgotten about that. I got the
cable for my phone and used Bitpim to dump my phone list into my new
phone. My previous phone was old enough it didn't have a lot of the newer
features and I didn't want to have to enter everything on the tiny little
keypad of the phone. If I had to type them, I'd rather at least use a full
sized keyboard!
Also I could back them up and if I move to another phone, just dump them
in instead of having to type them all over again.
Anyway, they're over here:
http://www.bitpim.org/
Their list of phones is here:
http://www.bitpim.org/help/phones.htm
You might want to see what they have to say about your phone model before
bothering to download the software (it's GPL so it's free, it's also
hosted by SourceForge which is a reliable source).

Thanks very much. That's what I assumed, but when I went searching
last night, everything I located referred only to music, especially
midis, and that just didn't sound right. I wasn't sure if it was
worthwhile to keep looking for a tutorial on non-musical ring tones, but
I'll keep looking now.

Funny you should say that. I use that bit from "The Prisoner" which
starts "What do you want?... Information ... You won't get it...". So
yes you can use more or less any sound you want, subject to the
limitations of the phone. Some phones come with apps that let you
convert from other formats, or it may use standard mp3's or whatever,
which are easily created.

In 20+ years of driving I've driven from west Houston to Lake Charles
on a whim, taken off at 2am and driven 300+ miles just to enjoy the
sunrise and headed down to Corpus Christi to see a sunset, and in all
that time, even with a blow out, a transmission failure and, once, an

I got that *ppbbtt* But it can be almost as dangerous for people to
walk in 120 degree heat as -20. At least in the heat, though, you can
sit down in the shade and recover.

In spite of everything I can still walk. I have done it before when my car
broke down, I can do it again. I have never had a cell phone, can't see any
reason to get one now.
Mostly it seems that they just annoy people, especially me when some moron is
paying more attention to their phone than to their driving. I nearly got hit
twice last week by such.

I agree with you. I grant there are times and places a person should
consider having a phone, but in general people seem to forget they're
capable of managing on their own two feet. I've long since decided that
if I could walk over a mile with bare feet with one twisted ankle and
one dislocated ankle, then getting to a phone after a flat tire isn't
too scary a prospect.
