The Herald and News—Klamath Falls, OR
Troops from KF arrive in Louisiana
Published September 8, 2005 Army National Guard soldiers from Klamath
Falls arrived in New Orleans Wednesday to help victims of Hurricane
Katrina.
More than 400 soldiers from Southern Oregon have been deployed, 70
from Klamath Falls and members of Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 186th
Infantry.
"They will have multiple tasks," said Sgt. First Class Spencer Martin.
"Primarly right now, the focus is search and rescue. Then they will
probably start patrolling a section of the city."
Another duty will be recovery of bodies.
The 186th Infantry will be assigned a section of the city, Martin
said. The members will stay in a warehouse for now, and provide their
own drinking water by using an Army purification system. The area the
battalion has been assigned is still flooded, and some parts are under
6 feet of water.
"There's no stop time. They will be stowing their gear and receiving
their orders," Martin said. "They will go in and try to find anyone
who's still alive and get them out of there."
Oregon's Army National Guard was notified Friday to prepare for
deployment to the Gulf coast. The last group of soldiers was to pack
at the Armory on Shasta Way and fly to the Gulf coast from Kingsley
Field today.
Some of the soldiers returned from deployment in Iraq a few months
ago, and the Gulf coast deployment is the fifth deployment since 2000.
"It's incredible what they give up," Martin said. He said he didn't
know how long the deployment would last.
"It depends on the needs of the city of New Orleans and the state of
Louisiana," he said.
