Children should be very afraid.

One conservative replacing another really won't change the balance
much. However the next candidate to replace swing voter, O'Connor, is
crucial. If we get a raging fundy, we are all in deep *****.
It might be too much to wish for, but I would hope that before that
happens, the Democrats would grow backbones and fight such a nomination
tooth and nail.

Half of the Democrats found enough spine to vote against Roberts. That

Children should be very afraid.

One conservative replacing another really won't change the balance
much. However the next candidate to replace swing voter, O'Connor, is
crucial. If we get a raging fundy, we are all in deep *****.

It might be too much to wish for, but I would hope that before that
happens, the Democrats would grow backbones and fight such a
nomination tooth and nail.

The Dems pretty split almost on Red State/Blue state about Roberts.
Bush's next appointee has Roberts' example for how to testify. If they
try to filibuster it will only make them look like ideological
obstructionists and the "nuclear option" will be back on the table in a
heartbeat.
