Woman Accused of Giving Sherry Enema
LAKE JACKSON, Texas (AP) -- A woman has been indicted on negligent
homicide charges for allegedly giving her husband a sherry enema that
killed him.
Michael Warner, 58, died last May after the enema caused his
blood-alcohol level to rise to .47 percent.
"That's extremely high," Detective Lt. Robert Turner said. "You're
either going to be in the hospital or the funeral home with that much
alcohol."
Tammy Warner, 42, was indicted last week.
Turner said Michael Warner was an alcoholic who could not swallow
liquor because of ulcers and heartburn.
"He was told that he could not drink alcohol or that he would die,
according to the people that we interviewed," Turner said. "We are
going to prove that she gave him the sherry and that she knew that he
wasn't supposed to have any and that it could be detrimental to his
health, and that she gave it to him anyway."
Tammy Warner was released on $30,000 bail. Her attorney did not
immediately return a call Thursday.

Turner said Michael Warner was an alcoholic who could not swallow
liquor because of ulcers and heartburn.
This had to be one hell of an enema. I personally have consumed a bottle of
Sherry at one sitting, well over a period of time, and evening four or five
hours. I doubt my alcohol level reached much over 125 mg per deciliter.
Even considering the increased absorption of the rectal mucosal tissues, I
find it difficult to believe that a single bottle of Sherry could induce an
alcohol level of .47%. Next having been in the medical profession for over
35 years, I have seen alcoholics with blood alcohol's far in excess of that
indicated above. In one case, I saw a person, an alcoholic, with a blood
alcohol above 600 mg per deciliter, this would equate to the legal alcohol
level of .60+%. While this person was obviously drunk. He was in some
semblance of control of his faculties. Many alcoholics can tolerate levels
of alcohol that would normally be considered lethal in a nondrinker, this
level is generally to considered to be about 400 mg per deal. Unless Mr.
Warner's liver was in end-stage cirrhosis, a level of .47% alcohol
concentration were not be considered exorbitantly high for real Pro drinker.
Typically end-stage alcoholics present with esophageal varices, and massive
bleeding, caused by cirrotic liver disease. Typically they bleed out. They
don't die directly from the high concentrations of alcohol.
So it seems to me that a significantly large volume of some type of
alcoholic beverage was introduced in a short period of time. This may have
been an attempt to ameliorate some of the discomforts alcoholics are prone
to feel when they're alcohol levels become "too low". But due to the
apparent large volume, having been introduced, I think this may have been an
attempt at assisted suicide. Well, not an attempt, an actual assisted
suicide. I have seen more than one instance of alcoholics leaving the
institution at which I work via cab and going directly to a bar, and be back
within hours. They simply wish to die in a mode that is as comfortable for
them as possible. In Mr.Warner's case invibing alcohol in the normal method
may have been excruciatingly painful.
It may simply be that charging Mrs. Warner, with negligent homicide, is
simply a way to reduce the possible sentence that she may incur. This
charge may draw a punishment far less than that for assisted suicide,
considering the current state of affairs regarding suicide assisted or
otherwise.

The rate of destruction of alcohol in the liver is fairly linier. The amount
required to saturate the capabilities of the liver is reasonably low, once
this saturation level is reached, alcohol levels go up. As I stated
absorption rates may very well be much quicker via rectal mucousal
absorption, even given this an upper blood alcohol level is determined by
overall dose, how quickly this level is reached depends on absorption rate
minus clearance rate. Besides all this the many of the deleterious effects
of alcohol is do to the aldehyde breakdown products that the liver produces.

If you drink alcohol, it is forced through the liver for
absorption and breaking down. If it is induced through the
rectum, it goes directly into the bloodstream with no chance
for the body to protect itself.
The human body evolved so that its blood vessels carry waste
to the colon for disposal. What she did was the reverse,
putting alcohol *into* the rectum which is quickly absorbed
into the blood. That's also why HIV spreads so quickly via
anal sex while much slower through vaginal sex because the
vagina has its own protective chemicals.

Yes, but the first pass breakdown is relatively limited. The liver
saturates very quickly, it has a relatively low detoxification rate for
alcohol.
The human body evolved so that its blood vessels carry waste
to the colon for disposal. What she did was the reverse,
putting alcohol *into* the rectum which is quickly absorbed

Yes, the rate of absorption is increased, but the upper level is dose
dependent.
That's also why HIV spreads so quickly via
anal sex while much slower through vaginal sex because the
vagina has its own protective chemicals.
The reason that HIV is spread so much more easily via rectal absorption is
that the rectal mucosal membrane is much much thinner than that of the
mucosal membrane of the vagina, as well as being an absorbtive structure
designed to absorb liquids. The rectal mucosa is ill designed to withstand
the physical abuses of anal intercourse. The tears introduced into this
structure allow direct access of the virus to the circulatory system. The
mucosal membrane in the rectum is only slightly more than a few cells thick,
the mucosal membrane of the vagina is much thicker and tougher, as well as
being a secretory structure as opposed to an absorbtive structure. Also,
there can be a significant difference in pH in the vaginal environment, as
opposed to the rectal environment. The HIV virus is a relatively fragile
virus, it is much less tolerant of environments outside of the body as
opposed to some of the hepatitis viruses, which will remain active on
environmental surfaces for as long as the year or more. The HIV virus would
only survive for a short period time in the external environment.
All this having been said, female workers in the sex trades are the
fastest-growing segment of the HIV-infected populations, here in the United
States.

Once it gets into the bloodstream. There's no connection from the
stomach to the liver.

And those were my questions. Is it somehow partially destroyed in the
stomach, which doesn't happen in the colon, and does it get absorbed
into the bloodstream differently from the upper GI tract than from the
lower GI tract?
That's also why HIV spreads so quickly via anal sex
The path in that case is through tears in the colon wall.
while much slower through vaginal sex because the
vagina has its own protective chemicals.
Vaginal HIV transmission rates in Africa, among so-called "dry women",
are just about the same as anal transmission rates, probably due to
micro tears in the vaginal wall.

Bulgarian Saturated with Alcohol Baffles Doctors
Incredulous doctors made five blood tests on a drunken man to
confirm he had a blood-alcohol content of 0.914, far above the
usual life-threatening range, police and doctors said Tuesday.
The 67-year old man, whose name was not released, was
hospitalized Dec. 20, when a car knocked him down on a street
in the southern Bulgarian city of Plovdiv.
A breath test showed high blood alcohol level, but police
officers thought the result was inaccurate, because the man
was conscious and talked with them, said Col. Angel Rangelov,
head of police in Plovdiv.
Laboratory analysis of five subsequent blood samples taken the
same day confirmed that the man had had a 0.914 blood alcohol
content, Rangelov said. An 0.55 blood-alcohol level is usually
considered as life-threatening.
Dr. Svetlan Dermendzhiev of Plovdiv's University hospital told
state news agency BTA he had not seen such a high level.
The man was reported in stable condition after treatment for
head injuries.

"He was told that he could not drink alcohol or that he would die,
according to the people that we interviewed," Turner said. "We are
going to prove that she gave him the sherry and that she knew that he
wasn't supposed to have any and that it could be detrimental to his
health, and that she gave it to him anyway."
That last sentence is bull. Nothing above idicates that the guy wasn't
supposed to have alcohol in his bloodstream or that alcohol in bloodstream
would be harmful to him.
The article says *only* that he wasn't supposed to DRINK any, that he wasn't
supposed to SWALLOW any liquor because of ulcers and heartburn.
So he probably figured out another way to administer it, and she helped.
OK, so they overdid the amount, but that's no more than an accident.
