OT: A "mobius" quiz: "Who first coined the phrase..." |
To two of my favorite forums:
The subject title should (hopefully) make sense to you in a moment, assuming you
know what a "mobius strip" is. ;-) The question is simple, and yet complex all
at the same time. And the question is:
"Who first coined the phrase, '...to coin a phrase'?"
:-?
Just curious... ;-)
A gazillion power crystals to the first person to respond with the right answer.
;-)

************************************************
The true mark of a civilized society is when its
citizens know how to hate each other peacefully.
************************************************
Put another way, a society can't claim the right
to label itself "civilized" until and unless its
citizens master "The Art of Peaceful Conflict".

L8r,

Similar phrases are attributed to Alfred, Lord Tennyson and George
Puttenham,
but the mobius will have to keep spinning.

A proposed bonus question: What was the first phrase that was coined?
(a half gazillion smoked oysters for an exactly supposed response)

In the 14th century, there was a phrase that is translated as "to coin,"
which means, literally, to make a coin. By the 16th century, "to coin"
became a de facto phrase to "invent something."
But, it wasn't until 1940 that "to coin a phrase" meant to be "invent a
phrase," meaning to make a cliched or banal statement.
There really isn't a single person that coined the phrase "to coin a
phrase," it became commonplace, like "bling-bling" or "hot dog!"
I do not know the first person to use it... I don't think we can know.
But the etymology above comes from the Oxford English Dictionary.

What about "bling-bling"? Surely SOMEONE must have been
the first to use it... it didn't just materialize out of the ether!
