OT: A Strange Request (at least I damn well hope so). |
Anyone know where I can get a couple of platinum electrodes suitable
for electrolyzing water in to Oxygen and Hydrogen?
And no, don't ask. Or I might tell you, and then you'll be really
bored.

Why do they have to be platinum?
Could use pencils, but it's more efficient to use the metal.
Brass/copper/etc will do it. Or do you want something that won't
oxidise as the oxygen is generated?
Well, as I understand it, the oxidisation slows things down in due
course.

Not something you want to do too often. I walked into our accounts office

It wasn't so much the graphic descriptions that got to me, as the sheer glee

Why platinum? I used the carbon rods out of D-cells when I did this

It's even less reactive than gold.
Electrolysis produces nascent, monatomic oxygen that will combine with
anything that can oxidise. Obviously it won't all do this but for
commercial or bulk production you need electrodes that won't oxidise.
One possibility would be aomething that conducts when the surface is
oxidised. Model railroaders use nickel silver (actually a
copper/nickel alloy) rather than brass for the track, for that reason.

Worse....a hydrogen powered engine. Big oil controls the US and any attempt

I'll ask my son. He's a chemistry major, so he'd be into that sort of

Best,
TW,
James says that such items could be found at specialty scientific supply
companies (the one that comes to mind is VWR... though whether that is
anywhere near you, I haven't a clue). I forget... aren't you one of the
folks in Australia? Just wondering.
Here in North Carolina, I often refer folks loking for scientific
equipment to Carolina Biological Supply... they've got about everything
you'd need for a lab. Hopefully, there's something of the kind near you.
Or the Internet... Google is always a viable option.
Hope that helps at least a little.

You don't need platinum, get hold of a soft pencil such as a 2B and gently
remove the lead. Use the lead as the electrodes and you will see O2 and H2
bubbling off. A small amount of salt may be required to make the water
conductive, but this will also produce a small amount of chlorine gas which will
produce that characteristic bleach/swimming pool smell.
Don't forget to use DC and not AC current.

It's not lead in those, it is graphite (carbon) and they will not
yield the same purity. O2 will also combine with the graphite to
produce CO2.

I did this as a science experiment as a kid. After making a *small
amount of hydrogen using a battery (I used D-cell cores for the
electrodes, btw) I then hooked it up to an old electric train
transformer. Made a whole jar of H2 in no time. Scared the hell out
of Mom when I "poped" it.

Why mess with a pencil. Get heavy mechanical pencil lead or a
graphite stick from an art supply store.

Carpenters pencils have big slabs of graphite - may be cheaper.
