Once again, Italian scientists have excelled themselves. Surgeon
Sandro Giannini managed to transplant an ankle into the shattered foot
of a rally driver disabled by a crash in 1991.
The operation, the first of its kind in Europe, involved inserting an
entire ankle joint, complete with cartilage, into the patient's foot.
Barring complications, Silvano Bordon, 48, from Treviso, will soon be
walking around on the ankle of a 17 year-old boy who died in a car
crash.
