OT: "Acoustic surfacing"? |
I know sound can be used in certain special conditions to levitate small
objects. I've only ever seen it done with round objects, but I'm not sure if
that's because they're the only shape that works or whether other shapes might
work, but the round ones are just easier.
That made me wonder if sound couldn't be used to create artificial "surfaces".
I picture dozens of tiny speakers arranged upon a bowl-shaped surface. The
speakers are focused on a certain set of points above the bowl-shaped array, the
set of points upon which they are focused being the intended dimensions of the
artificial surface one is trying to produce. I suspect that if it would work at
all, a plane would be the ideal shape to aim for when deciding the attributes of
the desired artificial surface. Four speakers - each aimed from positions
opposite each other, each pair existing on a line passing through the center of
the centimeter of space and being at a right angle to the line upon which the
other two speakers are situated. It seems to me that with such a setup, certain
frequencies at certain volumes focused in a tight beam at various points on the
same plane might be capable of holding at least some objects aloft.
Miniaturization would be key in getting this to work - if you could increase the
resolution of speakers-per-surface unit (say, for instance, having 4 speakers as
described above, but a different set of 4 speakers each focused on 0.1 cm
instead of 1 cm), it should be capable of forming an even more solid artificial
surface.
Does the concept seem feasible? I'm aware that the energy requirements needed
to produce any meaningfully useful surface would probably make this an
impractical method, and that we might not even be able to tolerate the
frequencies & volumes of sound that would be required. But if it would work in
theory, that's all I'm seeking to find out.
Thanks in advance for any and all replies. :-)
