Object: OT: And away we go!
$3 per gallon national minimum happening right now. Jumps of a quarter
or more per gallon all over the place. Long lines and shortages. It's
all so '70s. <g>
This picture is really amazing:

I still don't think you know you're born on the price of petrol /
diesel. The average price for unleaded in the UK is 90.2p a litre, and
just under 94p for diesel. i.e about USD 6.50 a gallon. So I can't say
I'm terribly sympathetic on this.

Well, that's the free market for you, particularly given that the
price rises anticipate shortages rather than reflecting their
actuality, i.e. they're charging the prices they may have to pay in
the future to replace goods they've already paid for.
Still I suppose it's a perfect illustration of money as a form of
ration ticket, though perhaps the distribution system could use some
work...

Then again, the high price you pay is due to high taxes, some of which
is at least going to benefit you and other British citizens. So you're
getting some of it back, and if you weren't paying it at the pump,
you'd be paying it somewhere else. The money we pay all goes to make
people like Bush richer, and we don't see jack from it, as but a small
percentage of it is taxes. Meanwhile, Bush has just given a $15 billion
dollar subsidy to the oil industry so they can find more oil and end
the shortage...like they want to end the shortage they've induced.

Not entirely. I don't like the oil majors any more than anyone else
but current high prices have a geological component. There is less
light sweet crude being produced since 2000 and the increase in crude
production since 2000 has been in heavy sour grades. The problem for
American refineries is that they prefer light sweet.
Sour means high sulphur content which is bad for the environment and
also corrodes refinery equipment when it bonds with hydrogen to become
an acid. Heavy means long hydrocarbon molecules and low fluidity.
Heavy crude also produces a lower volume of refined products per
barrel because the heavy hydrocarbons have to be cracked and that
demands extra hydrogen atoms at the end of the cracked molecules. They
come from other hydrocarbon chains thus reducing the volume of
products. To increase the fluidity of heavy oil water is mixed and
because water and oil don't like each other chemicals, which are
recovered at the end, are used to allow them to coexist. That all adds
to the cost and decreases the volume that a refinery can produce. The
drying up of light sweet in recent years is the key to the problem of
US refinery capacity.
There is a good reason why exploration is slow today. They find
insufficient amounts to cover the cost of exploration even in today's
climate of elevated prices. Mergers and takeovers are the preferred
way to for an oil company to increase oil reserves. Exploration is a
sure way to burn money. This is an excellent article on the increasing
costs of the oil industry. (http://tinyurl.com/aqtru). A pretty good
rebuttal of the idea that higher oil prices will encourage more
exploration and production because higher oil prices translate into
higher energy costs of doing everything - including oil exploration
and production.

Well yes, *but*
In the UK, if a litre of unleaded petrol costs 85p, 21.7p will be the
production costs and profit, around 51p will be duty and 12.5p will be
VAT on top of all that.

However nobody has mentioned heating oil. This winter is going to be
expensive. Last winter I had a fixed price of $1.59, The previous
winter 1.19. This one will be $2.69. And you use a lot of that in the
New England winters than you do gas/petrol.

I managed a lock just under that, and was happy to get

heading out to Home Depot this weekend to pick up a

get a wee bit chilly as well.

However nobody has mentioned heating oil. This winter is going to be
expensive. Last winter I had a fixed price of $1.59, The previous
winter 1.19. This one will be $2.69. And you use a lot of that in the
New England winters than you do gas/petrol.

I managed a lock just under that, and was happy to get
it. And yes, higher prices do impel conservation - I'm
heading out to Home Depot this weekend to pick up a
programmable thermostat to replace the decades-old
unit that came with my house. Upstate New York winters
get a wee bit chilly as well.

Don't forget to clean or replace your furnace air filter(s) on a
preferably monthly or six week basis.

Gotcha there. I've been thinking of replacing my furnace
with a gas model, but I'm having trouble working out the
ROI, what with NG pricing around my area being a little
unstable lately.

$3 per gallon national minimum happening right now. Jumps of a quarter
or more per gallon all over the place. Long lines and shortages. It's
all so '70s. <g>

I still don't think you know you're born on the price of petrol /
diesel. The average price for unleaded in the UK is 90.2p a litre, and
just under 94p for diesel. i.e about USD 6.50 a gallon. So I can't say
I'm terribly sympathetic on this.

That's why this ex-pat doesn't moan too much about gas/petrol.

Get a wood-burning stove. It's a bit of work to keep it stoked with
wood--mine burns up about a garbage can full of wood a day--but I use
about $50-$75.00 worth of wood a month to keep the place heated to 75
degrees . I have a small two-bedroom chalet. In months wehere I just
used the electric heat, my bill is over $300.00 a month to keep the
place at a chilly 50 degrees.

Well, that's the free market for you, particularly given that the
price rises anticipate shortages rather than reflecting their
actuality, i.e. they're charging the prices they may have to pay in
the future to replace goods they've already paid for.

Still I suppose it's a perfect illustration of money as a form of
ration ticket, though perhaps the distribution system could use some
work...

If it makes Americans think about smaller cars and conserving oil rather than
burning it all in giant SUVs and so on then I suppose it can only be a good
thing globally, but obviously tough on Americans who have got used to
ridiculously cheap fuel.

Heh, heh. I drive a `92 VW Golf Mk.2. I'm getting just about 26mpg in
`mixed' driving, and it's my own fault it's *that* low-I haven't
dragged my lazy butt out to tune it up since summer started.
I hate to say it, but I'm loving this. Watching the owner of the SUV
