Ann Coulter: The blonde assassin
http://news.independent.co.uk/people/profiles/story.jsp?story=551959
Does Ann Coulter really believe the outrageous things she says? To the
pin-up pundit of the American right, liberals are fascists - and all
terrorists are Muslims. Sholto Byrnes runs for cover
16 August 2004
Meet Ann Coulter. In her opinion, "liberals are racists", the French
are "a bunch of faggots", only property owners should be allowed to
vote, and anyone who disagrees with her is a "fatuous idiot" or
"evil". In liberal Europe, such propositions are seldom aired, even in
the most right-wing salons. In America, however, Coulter - blonde,
fortysomething - is a regular guest commentator on news and talk shows
such as Good Morning America, Hannity and Colmes, At Large with
Geraldo Rivera and The O'Reilly Factor.
Her brand of breathtakingly audacious invective has made her a heroine
of US conservatives and propelled her three books - Treason: Liberal
Treachery from the Cold War to the War on Terrorism; Slander: Liberal
Lies about the American Right; and High Crimes and Misdemeanors: The
Case Against Bill Clinton - on to the New York Times bestseller lists.
She is thought to be the inspiration for Ainsley Hayes, an extremely
right-wing Republican lawyer in The West Wing.

If you mean she's only in it for the money, I strongly
disagree. Just as most Creationists can't actually believe
that the *scientific* evidence supports Creation, Annie
Dearest can't actually believe all of what she says. However,
she *means* it (IMO) in the sense that she is totally
malicious and says these things to get her way because she
knows that by and large she can get away with them.

Gawd *forbid* that anyone cut too close to the bone when
dealing with conservatives. Good little boys and girls are
*always* 'responsible' and 'even-handed' when dealing with
conservatives because they *know* that the proper response to
bad words is *good* words.
That sort of thinking is a large part of why the USA is

Gawd *forbid* that anyone cut too close to the bone when

I have nothing against a sharp wit. I have much against greasy
insinuations and low attempts at character assassination.
Good little boys and girls are
*always* 'responsible' and 'even-handed' when dealing with
conservatives because they *know* that the proper response to
bad words is *good* words.
If you're suggesting that we should sink to the level of barely veiled
slander and left-handed character assassination on the justification
that someone else is doing so to us, then I'm going to say that I
consider that kind of race to the lowest common denominator to be the
sort of bad idea that most people shouldn't have left behind in the
third grade.
If you feel, however, that it's a good idea to wallow in the muck that
your opponents are slinging, be my guest. Just don't expect me to be
impressed when you complain that *they* are using dirty tactics if
your own tactics are indistinguishable from theirs.
That sort of thinking is a large part of why the USA is
in such a hideous mess.
I'm rather doubtful that the problems facing this country are caused
by anyone exercising a sense of rhetorical forebearance. I would
further say that if that if that is the source of all our ills, we're
rather more fragile of a country than I had thought.

Does Ann Coulter really believe the outrageous things she says?
Nah. She believes it's hysterically funny people give her money for her
screeds and laughs all the way to the bank...
If you mean she's only in it for the money, I strongly
disagree. Just as most Creationists can't actually believe
that the *scientific* evidence supports Creation, Annie
Dearest can't actually believe all of what she says. However,
she *means* it (IMO) in the sense that she is totally
malicious and says these things to get her way because she
knows that by and large she can get away with them.
Here is a recent URL about her:
http://www.counterbias.com/090.html
Ugh. I can't stand Coulter but this article put a bad taste in my
mouth. It struck me as being just the sort of below-the-belt attack
that she, herself, might write.
Gawd *forbid* that anyone cut too close to the bone when
dealing with conservatives.
I realized years ago that most avowed or reputed liberals or
moderates were phonies, masochists, or moral cowards (or a
combination of the three). So many of them would seemingly prefer
to live in their little ivory towers of righteous virtue rather
than actually do something about the infestation of conservative
political/religious smut peddlers. There is a vast army of
conservatives who are allowed, to a greater and greater extent,
to lie at will and to spread malicious misinformation unchecked.
Ann Coulter is by no means an isolated phenomenon. And yet, somehow
it is increasingly considered heinous to identify *conservative*
liars as liars and bigots as bigots. Those who attempt to deal
bluntly with conservative depredations are increasingly met with
horrified sanctimonious recriminations.
I did not expect for a moment that what I posted about Coulter
would meet with unqualified approval in alt.atheism. I am well aware
of the presence of a great many conservative and (ahem) conservative-
friendly posters in alt.atheism. That was one of the reasons I
eventually insisted that my name be removed from the "atheists" list
(In point of fact, I do not identify as an "atheist"--I try to avoid
-isms--but as completely non-religious). I pretty much realized the
game was up (so to speak) when an poster was allowed to assert,
without presenting any verifiable evidence, and without any dissent
from anyone other than me, that the editorial pages of the Wall
Street Journal have no influence.
So, Mr. Lias, you will no doubt be relieved to know that I
won't be disturbing your equanimity often. I have other things to
do.

Looks to me like Coulter was treated by the writer of that article almost
as badly as she deserves, and not nearly as bad as she treats others. The
woman is a hate-filled, malicious and incredibly cruel *****. To imply
that she deserves any sort of leniency is to imply that Hitler suffered
unjust defeats at the hands of the allies. I don't normally go for
bringing Hitler into a conversation out of spite, however, I fully believe
that she is exactly as hateful, and would be exactly as damaging if she
were nearly as powerful.

I think one of the mistakes that you made was that you identified Coulter as a
"conservative." There are few people of public prominence in America who are so
openly hostile to conservative ideology as Coulter is who aren't already part
of the Bush administration.
Conservatives believe in smaller government with limited powers checked by the
constitutional balance of powers. Coulter believes in absolutist government and
the elimination of constitutional checks and balances. Conservatives are
hard-core isolationists. Coulter is a hard-core interventionist. Conservatives,
like Goldwater, believe in governmental neutrality in regards to religion.
Coulter is a doctrinaire Christian supremacist and is very close to many of the
key figures in the Reconstructionist movement who have obviously strongly
influenced her thinking. Conservatives believe that the individuals concerned
are the final arbiters of their right to marry or reproduce. Coulter believe
that the State is the final arbiter in these matters with no recourse left to
the people.
Her views are closer to that of a Communist than that of a conservative, as are
most of the rest of the anti-American neo-conservative cabal who have usurped
the term "conservative" and applied it to their brand of totalitarianism.
Calling her a conservative is simply a gross misstatement of fact.

And the character was not "extremely right-wing". Although right wing,
she was also shown working for a democrat (something an "extremely
right-wing Republican" would choke rather than do), and opposing
government legislation as a whole, including on topics that 'extremely
right-wing' republicans favor; e.g., _The West Wing_'s equivalent of
the federal definition of marriage law.

I don't.
