New Solar Flare Detected
By Joseph B. Verrengia
AP Science Writer
Tuesday, October 28, 2003; 4:58 PM
Scientists again warned that communications on Earth could be disrupted
this week by another spectacular eruption on the surface of the Sun and
that it might even hamper firefighting efforts in California...
.... The cloud of charged particles from last week's eruption struck
Earth "with only a glancing blow," Kohl said. It disrupted some airline
communications.
But Kohl said scientists observed the biggest such explosion in 30 years
shortly before 6 a.m. EST Tuesday. It produced a particle cloud 13 times
larger than Earth and hurtled through the solar system at more than 1
million miles per hour.
The resulting geomagnetic storm could be ranked among the most powerful
of its kind and last for 24 hours.
It is expected to disrupt the communications satellites and high
frequency radios....

You think that's bad, mines been dead for 6 years. If she visited,
well, let's just say it would not be pretty.
But I did take stock and found the following:
I don't have cable tv, that's good. The sun can't screw that up.
I don't have satellite tv, another good. Not screwed up by old Mr. Sun.
I don't watch tv, even better. Do your worst oh mighty golden ball in
the sky.
No one calls me, good, communications safe.
I don't call any one, even better.
4 UPS's on my servers, controlled shutdowns are important in UNIX land.
If my DSL is hosed up, I still have plenty of books to read.
So, my little world is pretty safe. Now if only it leaves the
firefighters in California alone long enough for them to get ahead of
things.
I feel for the folks in CA. I remember all to well the Rodeo / Chediski
fires we had here last year. And the ones in CA have already burned
more then those did.

Is Kennedy really *that* wide?
He's got some hefty jowls.
The UK Conservative party is looking for a new leader. Perhaps he
could throw his name in the ring!
Do they consider three-martini lunches to be a problem?
No.
Then he'd fit right in with 'em.
What do you make of the claim that their family fortune was made from
bootlegging? Lies?
Accurate.

I guess it just goes to show that anybody can get into politics if
they have enough money. Doesn't even matter how they made the
money, by being an actor, or a bootlegger, or a drunk, or whatever.
I sure wouldn't take that route myself. I'd retire off to some quiet
place, away from the press and poparozzi peepers.

Not even enough money is needed. Being the 'right' political party in
an area and thumping the 'right' tome of superstition can be enough.
I sure wouldn't take that route myself. I'd retire off to some quiet

Scientists again warned that communications on Earth could be disrupted
this week by another spectacular eruption on the surface of the Sun and
that it might even hamper firefighting efforts in California...
Just when you think that things can't get any worse...
And Conan the Republican hasn't even taken over the statehouse yet. ;-)
At least he's in Washington trying to get help. Here is a great

Whew......
Can you imagine 'solar sailing or surfing?'.......
Dang...capture the energy and have enough power for millions of years.
The resulting geomagnetic storm could be ranked among the most powerful
of its kind and last for 24 hours.
It is expected to disrupt the communications satellites and high
frequency radios....
