Over the course of a decade, a woman I know took her college boyfriend
and then his successor (her husband) and then his successor to the same
American city for long weekends because, she explained, the stakes for
a short vacation (particularly with a recent romantic acquisition) are
so high that to land in an unfamiliar city with no firm itinerary
seemed too great a risk. She would toy with the idea of new
destinations, but each time she reached the planning stage the glut of
boosterish city guides and dining-and-sightseeing recommendations made
by unknown agents sent her scurrying back to the safety of Plan A.
