At Morocco Conference, Officials Say Support for Israel Hinders
Progress

RABAT, Morocco, Dec. 11 -- Senior Arab officials attending an
international conference to promote democracy in the Middle East
emphatically rejected on Saturday the Bush administration's assertion
that greater democracy in the region would help end terrorism. They
argued that the administration's strong support of Israel made it
difficult to undertake political reform or to stop extremists driven by
hatred of U.S. policies.

I am not surprised when the US supports so many despots including the
Saud family and protects them and their personal property such as
Saudi Arabia. You can't sell bucket loads of weapons to despots and
can turn and give a pro democracy cheer and expect anyone to be
impressed. Likewise the targeting of al Jazeera offices, the only free
media outlet in the middle east outside Israel, in Kabul and Baghdad,
the closing of newspapers in Iraq critical of US occupation by Bremmer
and other rather undemocratic measures. No I do not believe the US
want democracy. They want obedience. They certainly do not want
democracy when outcomes are those of the Venezuelan elections. In the
same way Chile under Pinochet was a shining light for the US even in
the absence of elections.

PARIS - In the year 212, Emperor Caracalla granted citizenship to all
free men in the Roman Empire. Emboldened by that precedent, a friend
of mine, a former high French official, once asked a president of the
United States to treat Europeans as compatriots. It was an agreeable
fantasy; only vassals were wanted.

"You touch me on a very tender point when you say that my friends on
your side the water cannot be reconciled to the idea of my abandoning
America. They are right. I had rather see my horse Button eating the
grass of Bordentown or Morrisania than see all the pomp and show of
Europe.
A thousand years hence (for I must indulge a few thoughts), perhaps in
less, America may be what Europe now is. The innocence of her
character, that won the hearts of all nations in her favor, may sound
like a romance and her inimitable virtue as if it had never been. The
ruin of that liberty which thousands bled for or struggled to obtain
may just furnish materials for a village tale or extort a sigh from
rustic sensibility, whilst the fashionable of that day, enveloped in
dissipation, shall deride the principle and deny the fact.
When we contemplate the fall of empires and the extinction of the
nations of the Ancient World, we see but little to excite our regret
than the mouldering ruins of pompous palaces, magnificent museums,
lofty pyramids and walls and towers of the most costly workmanship; but
when the empire of America shall fall, the subject for contemplative
sorrow will be infinitely greater than crumbling brass and marble can
inspire. It will not then be said, here stood a temple of vast
antiquity; here rose a babel of invisible height; or there a palace of
sumptuous extravagance; but here, Ah, painful thought! the noblest work
of human wisdom, the grandest scene of human glory, the fair cause of
Freedom rose and fell. Read this, and then ask if I forget America."

Oooh, and they certainly have the moral highground, don't they? A
bunch of dictatorial muslim/arab-nazis who perpetrate crimes against

So you don't know anything about demographics? Why do you think even
Likudnik fascists are contemplating withdrawing from the Occupied
territories?

But it's the U.S. who's supporting those dictatorial regimes in those
countries. Were you working for Prescott Bush before?
