Explanation is the only acceptable form of retaliation if someone
doesn't get your joke. Very long and excruciating explanation.
But alas JPG has put up a very erudite "why" earlier in the thread.

I understand that the epitaph on his tombstone will be:

And numerous sins upon his head
We buried him today, because
As far as we can tell, he's dead"

Paul Gascoigne was a famous football (soccer) player for England. During his
career he played for the following teams: Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur (a
London club also known as Spurs), and Glasgow Rangers (aka Rangers).
His nickname was Gazza - a sort of corruption of his last name which has become
quite common in vernacular youth speech of the UK during the last 10 years or
so.
(Someone called Barry will often be called Bazza, Karen becomes Kazza, Elizabeth
becomes Lizza, and Jessica becomes Jezza - you get the idea)/
The coloured clothing a team wears in order to distinguish them from the
opposing side is known as a "strip" for some unknown reason.
Because Yasser Arafat would be wearing the "strip" of the various teams Gazza
played for, he would in fact be buried in the Gazza Strip.
Very amusing to UK, Finnish and Malaysian people but probably leaving our
American friends wondering how they could have been descended from this crazy
lot of British people. I suppose Monty Python and Red Dwarf gives you an
inkling of our sense of humour.

I actually understand, and enjoy, Monty Python and Red Dwarf, but the joke
made no sense at all to me. (Or rather it did not until you explained it,)
but that just makes me wonder about that form of Brit humo(u)r. I guess a
person has to actually care about British feetball first. American football
for that matter bores me to tears ever more so than the Brit version.

I usually love the British sense of humor and enjoy their jokes a lot.
But that one was lost on me completely because I have no clue about
soccer/football what so ever. I was never very interested in athletics
and I find the game boring. I can watch ice-hockey now and then but
most other athletic games is about as interesting to me as watching
paint dry.

Motorcycles, practically any size, small British sports cars (don't ask me
why, I am 6'4" but find that the MG's are exactly the right size for me),
bicycles, archery, pistol shooting. To me those are real sports, and nice
thing about them, I don't have to try and convince 6 to 12 others to join me
in order to enjoy them myself.
