On the evening of Sept. 9, 1925, a mob of several hundred people began
forming outside a house in a middle-class Detroit neighborhood. Inside
was a young black doctor named Ossian Sweet who had dared to breach
the color line by moving into a white part of town with his wife and
child. His new neighbors were determined to drive him out, just as
similar Detroit mobs had driven away other blacks in the preceding
weeks and months.
