Sept. 8 - At the final performance of Tony Kushner and Jeanine
Tesori's brilliant "Caroline, or Change," in New York last week, a
woman sitting in front of me scanned the crowd at intermission and
observed, "I think we're safe; no Republicans here."
Those of us within earshot had to laugh. Maybe there were a few social
liberals in search of a tax break in the crowd. But the sung rage of a
black maid in Lake Charles, La., in November of 1963 was not a huge
draw for the audience that had come to town to see the convention show
at Madison Square Garden.
