OT: Arecibo; Are they talking to us? |
Heard a blurb on the radio at noon today. Seems the folks at Arecibo
Observatory in Puerto Rico are interested in some radio signals coming
from interstellar space. All I heard was that they'd received the
signals at two distinct times, and that the SETI folks were intrigued.
Anybody else heard about this? Where can I go to get the latest
information?

Right now, you can go to the Google news search thingie, type SETI, and
get a batch of recent articles about the flap. Apparently, it's just a Net
rumor that was sparked by a "New Scientist" article. Which article wasn't
even all that hyper about the signal. It was kind of a "isn't that
interesting" kind of thing. But nobody was doing cartwheels or anything.

Here's an article on the Planetary Society's website:

It's internet legend:

SETI has a snowball's chance in hell of detecting a signal. It's also
a distinct possibility that our technological civilization is a fluke.
