Arlie Russell Hochschild has a phrase for what the spread of the market
into every aspect of existence is doing to us. "We're being invited,"
she says, "into living ghostwritten lives."

homes, to salve our consciences, to ease our fears, to organise our
social lives. In short, as the title of her recent collection of essays
has it, we have commercialised our intimate lives
