Sir Arthur C. Clarke, author of "2001: A Space Odyssey" and other
popular science fiction novels, is among the survivors of Sunday's
tsunami that hit his home nation of Sri Lanka and other Asian
countries.
Like scientists who focus on the dangers of these incredible sea waves,
Sir Arthur has written about them. He provided this message Monday on
his foundation's web site:
"Thank you for your concern about my safety in the wake of Sunday's
devastating tidal wave.
"I am enormously relieved that my family and household have escaped the
ravages of the sea that suddenly invaded most parts of coastal Sri
Lanka, leaving a trail of destruction.

Likewise. I thought I heard that he lived in the Maldives,
not Sri Lanka. <whew>

Dont you remember his show, him strolling up the beach with a sun umbrella
on his shoulder while a voice over said
"Arthur C Clark now lives in Sri Lanka" ?

Yep. I used to have a bit of respect for Sir Arthur before I watched
that show. If the programs I saw are anything to go by, the guy may be
brilliant, but he's a textbook example of a credulous woowoo.

He has been living in Sri Lanka sine 1956. He's also the Chancellor of
Moratuwa University, Sri Lanka.

What was ironic is that the LA Times travel section last Sunday, the day
of the Tsunami, had a big write up on the Maldives. "What a cool place
to go for a vacation." I thought, until I heard the news.
