OT: Arturo Magidin's Essay |
Anyone who's been around this newsgroup for any amount of time has
probably seen posts from Arturo Magidin.
In addition to being one of the genuine Old Timers of the group (I
believe he started posting in '94, around the same time I slouched
into here), he's a extraordinarily smart guy with a keen wit and an
absolutely amazing sense of patience that often comes out when he's
explaining things to others.
Awhile back, he and I got into a debate about whether or not
mathematics should be considered a science. He took the pro stance
and I took the contrary position basing my primary argument on the
contention that science is an empirical study and that, among other
things, it requires a standard of falsifiability that doesn't exist in
mathematics.
Ultimately, he talked me around (once again exhibiting that legendary
patience of his).
I recently asked Arturo if he'd be willing to contribute a guest essay
to my blog on that very subject. He was kind enough to agree.
It is a very well written and comprehensible essay which is certainly
worth reading. It can either be found at the top of the main blog
(http://andrewlias.blogspot.com) or direct-linked at
http://andrewlias.blogspot.com/2004/08/is-mathematics-science.html
I'd certainly encourage everyone to come and take a look at it.
Essays of this caliber, on the web or elsewhere, are few and far
between, in my humble opinion.
