While Republicans were celebrating their recapture of California,
Democrats were consoling themselves yesterday with the hope that the
Schwarzenegger victory might yet backfire for President Bush next
year.
Gaining California's support could prove decisive for presidential
candidates in the 2004 elections. It is the most populous state in the
country and accounts for 54 of the 538 votes in the electoral college
that decides who wins the White House.
