OT: Asian tsunami and flashfloods, global warming and aid |
http://edition.cnn.com/2004/TECH/science/12/27/tsunamis.environment.reut/index.html
I guess it was only a matter of time before someone tried to
capitalize on this tremendous tradgedy... I don't *care* who you are
or how good your cause is, trying to give people the false impression
that tsunamis have anything to do with global warming and the disaster
in asia and using the fuss to further your own political cause is
morally reprehensible. I also find the find hype and push to 'donate
money to the flood victims' a sham, when we know that well over 80% of
the relief organizations budgets are used to pay their employees
salaries and travel expenses, and that so-called earmarked funds are
never earmarked at all, and that instead of using the money you donate
to buy food and clean water for those stricken by this tradgedy, your
money might end up funding christian militias in africa.

References, please. I bet if you actually bothered to check your
claim, you'd find it patently false.
For example, in 2004 the american red cross spent 3% on fundraising, and
5% on management. 92% was dispused to various disaster services.

Many who have left the organizations have left for this reason. Among
them my old economy professor, who btw is from Congo and had the
economic responsibilities for the european effort in that region for
several years, and my old language professor who worked in afghanistan
for over 7 years. It's been reported in the media here a few times,
however as you can imagine criticizing aid organizations is not very
popular.
