Gandhi's model of non-violent resistance has met with suspicion and
repression in the Middle East, writes Brian Whitaker

When events in the Middle East turn especially bloody, as they have
during the last couple of weeks in Najaf, I am often struck by a
whimsical - some might say ridiculous - thought.
I imagine that the man at the centre of the trouble is not Moqtada
al-Sadr (or whoever happens to be the villain of the moment) but
Gandhi, the leader of India's struggle for independence. I wonder what
he would have done about it.
