Her last book was a ferocious tirade against Islam and Muslims and the
lily-livered West that refused to stand up to them, written in a
white-hot rage in the immediate aftermath of the World Trade Centre
attacks. It scandalised liberal Europe, was nearly banned in France,
provoked a mountain of hate mail and drew an exhortation by Muslim
extremists to kill her. In her native Italy it was a bestseller.
