OT (auto culture): Vee Dub. Vee vill un-pimp your ride. |
Hi to my Euro friends, and to fellow gearheads out there in alt.atheism
land..
Here in the US, the current custom car trend is the "Import Tuner"
trend. Basically, kids take old Japanese sport compacts, and modify
them to resemble Touring Car racers (ironically enough, "real" touring
car racing only lasted about 3yrs. in the US..go figure). However,
since the trend is now about 10yrs old, some of these guys have built
some really outrageous cars that are much more "show" than "go (called
"pimping"). My old friends at VW (mine are a `92 Mk.2 Golf, and a
glorious `92 Corrado VR6) have noticed that "Dubs" are Germany's
representatives in this culture. Most of the VW guys I know scoff at
the body kits & wings & stuff, and spend their money on improved
suspension and engine parts.
It would appear that VW of North America's ad agency has picked up the
scent. Over in Europe, the Golf may just be a frumpy, practical
sedan-but here in the `States, the 2-door with the GTI sporting package
is a dragonslayer. Check out the last three ads on this page ("Crate",
"Wrecking Ball", and "Catapult"). They're hilarious.

I finally got out of the VW thing in 1984, when I started buying new cars
- Japanese, then American. But not before I owned five old rear-engine
VWs (not all at once).
'66 Bug (starter car)
'68 Bug (tricked out with 13" SS mags)
'67 Camper (my personal favorite - died on my wedding day in Vegas)
'70 Bug (caught fire one day while driving it)
'72 Bug (my pizza delivery car for 3 years)

Sweet! One of the cars I learned to drive in was a `6something Bug (all
I remember is that it was a 1300). Both the watercooled *and* aircooled
guys think I'm weird because I like both. The two crowds don't mix very
much in the Southeast. Which is a shame, because there's no rust
problem and there are some very nice older cars down here.
