Influencing New Labour from within hasn't worked - but the liberal

Shortly before he died, the irreplaceable Paul Foot posed a question,
so obvious and so direct that no blather or bluster would do. "What
ever happened", he barked, "to the Labour left?" My answer was that it
had gone on strike and walked out. And on reflection that seems about
right. Half of Labour's membership has simply disappeared, given up,
retired to their armchairs or thrown their energies into other
campaigns as the great moving right show of the last decade gathered
pace.
