OT: Barack Obama and intelligence |
Why do so many stories about Sen. Obama insist on talking about his
intelligence. Of course he's intelligent. Is it because he's black? I
don't remember them rambling on and on about how intelligent Clinton was.

No. Just the opposite, in fact. Which was why I didn't get why it
was supposed to seem funny, I guess. But I'll take your word for it -
there are certain kinds of humor I just don't get, this must be one of
them.

There seems to be a not-so-subtle racism at play here, as Obama is also
described as "articulate." I don't know of too many politicans who
aren't articulate, and even Bush can string a coherent sentence
together from time to time. But Obama's no Cicero, and he's not an
Einstein either, so I don't see the need to continually point out that
he's intellgent and articulate unless it is due to a fascination or
surprise that a black guy can talk and think.

I think its because of the obvious contrast to Bush and 75% of
republican politicians.
They always talked about Clintons charm - not that he is not
inteligent - just that you are to busy noticing his charm to notice
that he is inteligent.

It will be interesting to see how those who work with Bush cast him after
he's out of office. I'll bet it comes out that cabinet meetings are
dominated by others and when it's time for a decision, he looks over to
Cheney.

Hillary is intelligent. John Edwards is intelligent. So are Al Gore and
many other Democrats. You never see the media talking about their
intelligence. But they always seem to point out that Barack is intelligent.

Believe it or not, I'd say a lot of that is his own PR machine doing
its job for him. Hillary et al may not feel the need to emphasize
that aspect of their person at this time.

The press did talk about both Clintons being intelligent.
And Al Gore who is probably, as far as IQ goes, brighter than most of
them except maybe for Bill.
But Biden came across as being patronizing and frankly Obama handled
it very well.
Its going to be interesting to see if he can maintain his grace under
fire in the process he's going to have to go through.

Exactly. You don't remember.
You zero in on remarks about Obama's intelligence because you had this
notion, but didn't pay attention to any of the zillions of times other
candidates are referred to as intelligent (even when they're not).
