Much has been made of Barack Obama's call for a 'new' kind of politics
and his disparagement of the 'smallness' of our politics. Amongst
some supporters, this is viewed as him playing a healing role in our
society and political process. Amongst his detractors, it is viewed
as a vacuous, "getting along for the sake of getting along" attitude
that opens him up to charges of Liebermanism or hypocricy when he
throws a sharp elbow.
Both groups are wrong. He is not talking about being nice, civility,
gentle tones, and warm fuzziness.
He is talking about power. A fuller explanation below the fold.
