Canada's new leader wants to mend fences with Washington, but public
opinion dictates that he cannot be seen to be too keen, writes Anne

The Canadian prime minister, Paul Martin, begins the delicate task of
improving strained relations with the United States tomorrow when he
meets George Bush in Mexico.
It is an open secret that the White House had little but disdain for
Mr Martin's predecessor, Jean Chretien, who opted not to join Canada's
closest ally in the Iraq war. The disdain was mutual, judging from the
ill-considered comments of one of Mr Chretien's closest advisors last
year. In a widely reported remark, she told a journalist the US leader
is "a moron", causing the offended party to cancel a planned trip to
Ottawa.
