For almost a month now, the UN Security Council has fiddled while
Lebanon burns. The body mandated to maintain peace and security among
nations has watched, divided and discredited, while some 900 Lebanese
civilians have died at the hands of Israel and some 40 Israeli
civilians at the hands of Hizbullah.
Israel's war aims change by the day. What was to have been a short,
sharp air campaign has become a month-long land, sea and air war with
seven brigades now committed to the Lebanese "mud". How many more
deaths must there be before the United Nations orders a stop to the
slaughter? How is it that the UN has mounted a 14-month investigation
into one political assassination, that of former Prime Minister Rafiq
Hariri, but has done nothing, absolutely nothing, about this?

The UN is broken. It's usefulness is a mirage, and we must all stop
expecting miracles. Iran has said it would ignore any rantings
from the UN, why don't we believe them?

Mr. Samuel Clemens was once asked whether he feared death.
He said that he did not, in view of the fact that he
had been dead for billions and billions of years before he was born,
and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.

The U.N. isn't broken, it's misused.

No. The problem is that we want it to do things that
we refuse to give it the power to do.
If the U.N. had the power to truly shape the world,
the United States would be it's first victim. Israel and
Europe would follow, but the United States would be
the first on the ***** list. We don't want that, and
we've labored to prevent the U.N. from having that
kind of power.

Bush said the exact same thing. Apparently you've
forgotten.
See how the bitching about the U.N. works? As a
matter of policy we have to keep it weak, to keep
it from forcing us to do what it wants, then we
***** that the U.N. is weak ad can't force other
nations to behave.
There are two solutions here, and both are quite
simple:
#1. Accept the idea of the U.N. as a stick, and
the fact that it will often be used to hit us.
#2. Accept the fact that we don't want the U.N.
to be a stick, and adjust our expectations to
this reality.

I would have to agree with this. The US would be the first
victim because other less powerful nations wish to see us
brought down a few notches.

Iran has said it would ignore any rantings

I must have missed that particular speech. Cable news channels
here in San Diego are stunted, and hide much from the public.

Regardless, the UN is so corrupt, who can trust them
with money anymore?

#2. Accept the fact that we don't want the U.N.

#3 Accept the fact that is is not salvagable, and expel
the UN from US soil. If in fact the UN has any usefulness,
others will offer up territory for a new, plush building.

What's surprising about this? The UN's watched genocide, murderous
dictators, etc, etc, etc. None of the nations really care beyond how it
affects them. In words, perhaps, but in action, they have to justify it to
their isolationist citizens, bean counters, boards, etc. Hezbully was
already supposed to be disarmed by Lebanon. They didn't have what it took
to do it, sadly, especially with Iran and Syria undermining them
continuously.

Israel's war aims change by the day. What was to have been a short,
sharp air campaign has become a month-long land, sea and air war with
seven brigades now committed to the Lebanese "mud".

The Hezbullies are very entrenched in southern Lebanon. It'll take a lot of
effort to break them.

How many more
deaths must there be before the United Nations orders a stop to the
slaughter?

Infinite, in my assessment, since there's no correlation between deaths and
action historically for the UN.

How is it that the UN has mounted a 14-month investigation
into one political assassination, that of former Prime Minister Rafiq
Hariri, but has done nothing, absolutely nothing, about this?

Because an investigation doesn't actually cost them anything significant?
They're do nothings.
