By Peter Popham in Rome
16 March 2005
Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian Prime Minister, will begin withdrawing
Italian troops from Iraq in September.
On Porta a Porta, a television talk show on which he often makes
important announcements, he said: "As early as September we will begin
a progressive reduction of the number of our soldiers in Iraq." The
pace of the withdrawal will depend, he said, "on the capability of the
Iraqi government to give itself structures for acceptable security.
I've spoken about it with Tony Blair, and it's the public opinion of
our countries that expects this decision."

Am I the only one who has noticed Al Qaeda's inactivity in
Spain since they pulled out? Maybe Berlusconi is finally
waking up to reality.

Al Qaeda has not been "inactive" in Spain since the pullout.
http://www.iht.com/articles/2005/03/13/news/spain.html
Officials see hundreds ready to strike

MADRID One year after the worst terrorist attack in Spanish history, the
Spanish police continue to uncover and thwart new plots involving
Islamic militants, according to senior Spanish intelligence and law
enforcement officials.
Despite sweeping measures to improve their ability to investigate
potential terrorism since the bomb attacks that killed 191 people on
March 11, 2004, and one police officer in the aftermath, the officials
estimate that there are hundreds of people scattered in cells around the
country committed to attacking centers of power in Spain...

Maybe Berlusconi is finally waking up to reality.

That "reality" being that the Iraqis are gaining the upper hand over the
insurgency.

I thought they all didn't count in the first place, you know, the coalition
of the bribed and coerced and all that, so why is it now suddenly
significant that they're "pulling out?"

"I am not changing a single word of what I have said, this was a case of

only stated common sense things which everybody should agree with".
Berlusconi pointed out that "we are not an occupation force, we are
there to make sure that Iraq can become independent and democratic and
we have started this process with the recent elections". The premier
underlined that yesterday the people's assembly met for the first time
and that there will soon be a government: "We are training and preparing
Iraq's future police and security forces and slowly these forces will be
capable of guaranteeing law and order, the Italian troops will be able
to decrease their presence". Premier Berlusconi pointed out that "there
is no pullout plan yet and there has been no reaction from the EU yet.

No, quibbler, I just didn't comment on it. I notice that you aren't

Your comment didn't merit serious consideration. Bush is the one
claiming that the "coalition" was significant. Therefore, the fact
that the pathetic coalition as continued to atrophy should be
significant by his own argument. I really don't care if it actually
has a real logistical impact. It has a psychological/morale impact.

Sheesh. Next time I'll send you a copy of the joke by certified mail

Your comment didn't merit serious consideration.

And then you proceed to give it serious consideration:

Bush is the one
claiming that the "coalition" was significant.

So you're agreeing with him now?

Therefore, the fact
that the pathetic coalition as continued to atrophy should be
significant by his own argument.

And you accept that argument, or you'd not be making it out to be
siginificant yourself.

I really don't care if it actually
has a real logistical impact. It has a psychological/morale impact.

Yes, it's obvious that you are terribly demoralized by the evident
success of Bush's policy. Otherwise you wouldn't be crowing over such
"insignficant" forces pulling out of Iraq *because their job is done*.

Sheesh. Next time I'll send you a copy of the joke by certified
mail so I can be sure that you'll "get it".

Sheesh yourself.
