So will someone please tell me: what's so 'democratic' about a late
politician's power being instantly and automatically passed on to someone
else in the same family...??? Aren't 'democratic' and 'dynastic' meant to be
*political opposites*...???

Should Hillary Clinton be elected President next November, it will
mean that the White House will have been in the hands of two families
for nearly a quarter century.
You can find numerous occurances in the US of Congresspersons dying in
offices and having their spouses appointed to replace them for the
remainder of their terms. Rep. Sonny Bono's wife Mary was appointed to
replace him after he was assassinated by a cabal of trees on a ski
slope.
The reality is there are always going to be political families. They
have the money, the tradition, and the connections to get into office.
The Kennedys are the most obvious American version of this.

OK. Let's check this out;
Argentina, Peron, Peron again, & Peron.
India, the Nehru family, Papa Pandit, daughter Indira, her son Rajiv
and daughter-in-law Sonjia.
USA, The Adams family; Woodrow Wilson post health problems, with
devoted wife Ellen pulling the strings behind the scenes; The Kennedy
pseudo dynasty; LBJ bolstered by the Ladybird business accumen; The
mighty Bushes; the ambitious Clintons and all the widows of dead
Congressmen and Senators a la Sonny Bono.

Political activism runs in families. While the grown up children of
apolitical parents often get political, it is deeply ingrained in
those of politically active parents.

I think you're making special rules for third-world countries, old bean --
or maybe just for those compliant and corrupt third-world politicians bought
and paid for by the West.
If David Cameron was assassinated in London tomorrow, and we were told that
leadership of the Conservative Party would pass to his son and his spouse,
with the spouse running the show until the son was older, you'd think
'democracy' was being *fucked in the ******...
It's not a question of 'activism' running in families. It's a question of
*power and privilege* running in families under the disguise of a faked
'commitment to democracy'.

That doesn't describe the Bhuttos.
Or say, William Pitt the elder and younger, or the various Foots
(Feet?), Churchills etc in the UK.

I'm afraid it does! Massively and shamelessly corrupt during their time in
office (over military aircraft, tractors, and far more besides), Benazir and
her equally kleptocratic husband were the West's preferred option for the
'new', post-Musharraf Pakistan. After all, she could be relied upon to say
the word 'democracy' at least 5000 times a day -- without ever coming close
to actually doing anything about it! Her record in government speaks for
itself on this issue...

Or say, William Pitt the elder and younger, or the various Foots
(Feet?), Churchills etc in the UK.

Churchill's Conservative Party did not pass into the hands of his relatives
after his demise: in the UK there is some degree of concern for and
commitment to grass-roots representation and internal democracy. The West,
however, doesn't require or tolerate such a commitment to democracy in its
third-world partners and clients -- because if we did, we'd have to buy
*more* than just the leaders...

You might think that, but countries like India, Indonesia, Pakistan and
the United States seem quite willing to try to do both. Democracy tends
to be the loser in each case.

Indeed; but there's a difference to be noted: much as I despise the Kennedys
and the broken political system they represent, the fact remains that fat
idiot Edward didn't 'automatically' step into the organisational shoes of
either deceased brother. *The DNC isn't 'passed down'*...

What possible explanation does the Republican party have for choosing
George W Bush?

They knew he'd make a popular puppet -- whom tens of millions of rubes would
think of as a "good ol' boy". And sure enough, they've got two massively
profitable terms out of him -- with Cheney still in reserve...
Don't think of Bush and the Repugs as having 'failed': the America that got
royally fucked over is the America you live in, not the one they do.

What power would that be? She held no political office when she was
killed. She was going to run for office in 2008.
