One of the top national officials for Boy Scouts of America in Irving
has been indicted for receiving and distributing child pornography.
Investigators allege that Douglas Sovereign Smith Jr. traded several
computer images of minors having sex, according to the indictment from
the U.S. District Attorney's Office in Fort Worth.
"We're just shocked," said Boy Scouts spokesman Gregg Shields. "He had
been with the Boy Scouts for 39 years and there's no indication of any
criminal activity."
Ho Hum... Anyone surprised?

I hate to bring this up, but how long do you think it will be 'till the
fundamentalist kooks start saying "See, this is why homosexuals aren't
allowed in the BSA! 'Cause they are all child rapists!", or something
along those lines? Personally, I think they'll start coming out of the
woodwork in two days or so, four tops. Sad world we live in, eh? :/

There are also lawsuits in Utah where it is alleged that about
half a dozen Boy Scout officials were told of a molester for
years, and they ignored the warnings:

in reply to criticism of the Boy Scouts, defending the BSA
and castigating the ACLU. A posting in the scouter.com

Boy Scout Pride
Dear Editor:
Bruce Collins is mistaken when he calls Boy Scouts a "fundamentally
different" organization from the one he joined 40 years ago. ["An Eagle
Scout Takes Issue With Group's Politics" July, p. 7]. Boy Scouts is the
same organization with the same values and goals. What is fundamentally
different, however, is our times.
Some intolerant elements in our society want to force scouting to
abandon its values and to become fundamentally different. They want
scouting to forego its constitutional rights, affirmed in 2000 by the
Supreme Court in BSA v. Dale, and adopt fundamentally different values
from the ones that helped shape the character of Mr. Collins and 106
million other young men over the past 94 years.
It bothers Mr. Collins that scouting is defending itself, even though he
acknowledged that it has been "dragged into" the "culture war." He says
the tone of our legal-issues web site, bsalegal.org, is defensive. The
site does seek to defend our values and to inform the public about the
three-decade-long legal assault on scouting. That we need a legal-issues
web site is testament to the fact that our constitutional rights are
under attack.
Clearly, Mr. Collins longs for a time when the Boy Scout organization
could give its undivided attention to the "good stuff" of Scouting:
"camping and life skills ..." So do we. Mr. Collins would do well to
communicate his displeasure to those directing their discriminatory
assault against his beloved Boy Scouts -- the ACLU.

Funny, www.bsalegal.org never bothered to update their web site
when the BSA agreed to drop thousands of public school charters,
or when the courts in Oregon agreed that BSA recruitment in grade
school constitutes discrimination against atheist kids.

I was just going to post about Mr. Smith's William Bennett-style
hypocrisy. Seems like the loudest "morality crusaders" are the guys
with the most to hide.
