OT: Boycott Sony |
Now they have gone too far.

According to Computer Associates, the Sony software makes itself a
default media player on a computer after it is installed. The software
then reports back the user's Internet address and identifies which CDs
are played on that computer. Intentionally or not, the software also
seems to damage a computer's ability to "rip" clean copies of MP3s
from non-copy protected CDs, the security company said.
"It will effectively insert pseudo-random noise into a file so that it
becomes less listenable," said Sam Curry, a Computer Associates vice
president. "What's disturbing about this is the lack of notice, the
lack of consent, and the lack of an easy removal tool."

If they intend to distribute this software in the UK, their lawyers
will need to look carefully at this:

People just need to stop buying any Sony Music products for a while, and
they will fold up pretty quickly. This nonsensical copy protection stuff
needs to be stopped and if people don't buy the stuff, they will wise
up.
We as consumers have the ultimate power. Don't buy their stuff, we can
get by without the latest CD by whatever group for a while. Is it that
hard for people to wait a month or two? If the latest CD by (whoever)
sinks like a fish, they would blame it on the artist, but if several of
them tank, then it's gonna shake them up.
Sony isn't doing so well lately, and they really don't need a boycott,
but maybe it will snap them back to reality. Funny how nobody had any
problem with us copying stuff onto cassettes, they sold millions of
blank tapes without any whining, but file sharing.....wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
Besides, you can play it in analog form and record it back digitally and
get around it anyway, it just won't be a "perfect" copy. Big deal. Still
sounds ok in most cars/trucks/SUVs.

Actually, the recording industry made a big stink at that time too.
Recording labels continue to be given a percentage from each
recordable CD/DVD as they did with audio or VHS tapes in the name of
"piracy tax". What's more, corporations like Sony also sell blank
media, hard disks, cd/dvd burners... etc and you don't see them
complaining that that side of the business is going "too" well.

There are plans to insert DRM chips in analog devices.
All signals from analog will have imbedded signals
that will make DRM enabled analog recorders ignore
the stream, and not copy.
The idea is to mandate all future analogue devices have
these things. Then to mandate migration to new media,
all future TV signals will have it and as we move to
HDTV, analgue copying will eventually be impossible.
Radio will move to a new digital format and FM/AM is
to eventually follow analogue TV format into oblivion.
The little bastards are working hard at this.

Linux and Mac users have nothing to fear. It is still a shitty thing for
Sony to do.

Indeed. Shoot, I'll boycott them just because they laid me off last year,

Mac users do actually. The Mac stuff is less invasive
but the Sony system does install on Macs if you accept that
and allow it.
And a number of companies are out there writting removal
scripts so that should soon be easier than the benighted
Sony way of going about it all.
At least one is writing a system that no only boots Sony
DRM but prevents a reinstall.
That should be popular with IT staffs world wide.
I suspect DRM schemes will be given a lot more
scrutiny from now on.
