President George Bush yesterday made a rare visit to Congress to
assuage Republican politicians nervous about the worsening situation
in Iraq and the president's own sinking popularity as they face their
own re-election battles.
Behind closed doors, Mr Bush assured his party that Iraq would be
weaned from dependence on the US and that John Negroponte, the new
ambassador to Iraq, would not be running the country the way Paul
Bremer, the outgoing governor, has done - according to senators at the
session.
