White House Says Iraq Weapons Search Over
WASHINGTON - The search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq (news -
web sites) has quietly concluded without any evidence of the banned
weapons that President Bush (news - web sites) cited as justification
for going to war, the White House said Wednesday.
The Iraq Survey Group, made up of some 1,200 military and intelligence
specialists and support staff, spent nearly two years searching military
installations, factories and laboratories whose equipment and products
might be converted quickly to making weapons.
White House press secretary Scott McClellan said there no longer is an
active search for weapons. "There may be a couple, a few people, that
are focused on that" but that it has largely concluded, he said.
"If they have any reports of (weapons of mass destruction) obviously
they'll continue to follow up on those reports," McClellan said. "A lot
of their mission is focused elsewhere now."
Chief U.S. weapons hunter Charles Duelfer is to deliver his final report
on the search next month. "It's not going to fundamentally alter the
findings of his earlier report," McClellan said, referring to
preliminary findings from last September. Duelfer reported then that
Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) not only had no weapons of mass
destruction and had not made any since 1991, but that he had no
capability of making any either. Bush unapologetically defended his
decision to invade Iraq.
Bush has appointed a panel to investigate why the intelligence about
Iraq's weapons was wrong.

"The President is merely the most important among a large number
of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to
the degree which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct,
his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and
disinterested service to the Nation as a whole. Therefore it is
absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty to tell
the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly
necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when
he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both
base and servile. To announce that there must be no criticism of
the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or
wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable
to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about
him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth,
pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else."

The Republican witch hunt over Clinton showed that impeachment is now
part of the political process, and no longer a trail for "high crimes
and misdemeanours". Anything now goes to try and oust a popular
President that the Republicans don't like.
So Republican-controlled House and Senate won't do it to a Republican
President, no matter how egregious his crimes are.

I said, when it all started, that Saddam Hussein , was acting the pratt, that he
had no weapons, but was making it difficult for the inspectors, to provoke a
reaction from America.
They had ***** on him once, under Bush Sn, and he was trying to get even in the
only way left to him, on the world political stage.
I think he was hoping to win a political victory, big powerful America, bullying
honest, defenseless, little Iraq.
He reckoned without the power of stupidity, dishonesty, and fanaticism.
The thing is, even if they hang him, and I am sure the shrub, will push for it,
he has still won.
America, and the UK, are in a state of war, that has all the earmarks of
becoming another Korea, or Nam.
It is costing billions, and not a drop, so far as I can ascertain, of Iraqi oil
is flowing toward America, of the UK, or anywhere else, for that matter, to
help with the cost.
A billion tax payers, are paying for the arrogance and stupidity of two men.
If it was me in Saddam's shoes, I'd be laughing all the way to the gallows.
Personally, I don't think he will ever come to trial. In twenty years or so,
some human rights group will manage to get him released, should he survive so
long, he will disappear into obscurity, and be forgotten.
But he will have cost the west, dearly.
