OT: California Coast overrun by Painted Ladies |
I'm watching this now! Millions of butterflies on their way north and
west. It's incredible! The birds are having a field day! (I think
they're all too full to move, actually.)
The butterflies are only an inch or two across. They come singly or in
groups of two or three. All heading the same direction. All about six
to twelve feet above ground.
I've lived here all my life and can't remember anything quite like this!

Ladies splash coast with paint

A relatively infrequent airborne spectacle has local nature watchers in
a flutter. Millions of painted lady butterflies are making their way
from the deserts of the Southwest, where they breed, to new feeding
grounds in the Northwest. On their way, they're creating quite a sight
on the Central Coast -- splashes of orange, black and white winging
their way across yards and fields. Unlike the similarly colored but
bigger monarch butterflies, which migrate every year, painted ladies do
so sporadically. This year, drenching rains in the deserts prompted
plants to burst from the ground -- offering plenty of fodder for the
caterpillars. After the breeding bonanza, the butterflies are looking
for new places to feed. This painted lady takes a break on a Pride of
Madera flower at the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum.
