Call for calm as world of employment tilts

economies

The Guardian
Ross Perot, the maverick American billionaire who helped lose George
Bush senior the 1992 election once described the impact of free trade
as "the sucking sound of jobs disappearing south to Mexico".
British workers say they can hear the sound down the telephone line -
the noise of thousands of jobs in call centres around the country
disappearing to developing countries. In India and South Africa,
workers paid a fraction of UK wages are learning the plots of British
soaps and following the weather in British towns to ensure that
customers checking their bank balances or booking a flight have no
idea that the voice at the other end of the line is thousands of miles
away.
