Standard military stuff when you're going into unknown territory. And
that's it. If one 'disappears' maybe the other will not be affected and
able to report back.
On that 6-1/2 months Med Cruise I was on going in at least pairs was
standard operating procedure. Witness, report back.

I'm serious. Before man came along, when would they have
developed a like for it? I thought it might actually scare them
off, since man would be around the fires. I could understand

Really, that response you have at a cookout when something hits the
grill and starts sizzling isn't simply pavlovian. When a predator smells
meat in ANY edible state, he tends to get hungry.

Even everglades can have grass fires. Animals of all
sizes get trapped and are wounded or die in them.
Burnt animal means an easy meal for an opportunistic
scavenger like an alligator.

At least it was a polite 'gator. It knocked and tired to ring the bell.
I never knew burning meat would attract them.
It might have smelled the chicken before they placed it on the grill.

Beware if it's 'punked'...... ;)

Actually, according to the story, a crowd had gathered and spooked the
'gator. I doubt the meat had anything to do with it, he was trying to get
away from *people.
(Who could blame him?)

I heard that the alligator did escape and skedaddled
back to the water from whence he came.

I'm sorry, did you read the story?
The couple cooking the chicken noticed the gator lurking at the edge of
a pond. Then, when they went inside, it wandered up to their house, and
began circling it.
Neighbors wouldn't go near the thing. The picture was taken with a
telephoto lens at what the photographer estimated was about 30 feet.
I think it's pretty clear the gator was after food.
