OT: Car prices in US - Dealer's cost |
I was told there are lists online of how much a car costs the dealer,
and I'd really like to see these. The person who told me about them
couldn't remember the industry term for the price, and every search I
did was just too wide; they returned too many sites to look through.
I'm hoping someone here may already know where (if) these lists can be
found. Thanks.

There's the famous "Kelley Blue Book" which can be found
online at www.kbb.com , or you could just buy it at your local
book store.
Try www.edmunds.com, if you want ratings.

The usual price listed is the "Invoice Price."
It's a bit deceptive, as the invoice is usually inflated by the
manufacturer. It includes a "hold back" -- anywhere from a
few hundred dollars on up -- that is returned to the dealer.
Manufacturers make certain demands of their "authorized
dealers," and if the dealers meet these demands the money
is returned to them.
In other words, the dealer's "Invoice price" includes a small
profit.

I have three quotes on the old car from Kelley, but the new car
prices are the higher MSRP, which I hope to avoid.

Thanks. I'll check them.

Better than a multi-thousand dollar profit, definitely.

Edmunds.com is usually listed as the place to get the "dealer invoice"
price, but I actually found when I bought my car that dealer invoice
was less than Edmunds said it was--so your mileage may vary, so to
speak. Also remember that "dealer invoice" isn't the dealer's actual
cost, as there is also the holdover, factory discounts and hidden sales
incentives. You can almost always get a car below invoice if you
negotiate with a dealer looking to move cars. If the dealer isn't
willing to sell below invoice, then walk.
The way I negotiated was to tell the dealer to give me his low-ball
price, and that I was going to go to other dealers and whoever have me
the lowest price, I would buy from him. I made it clear I wouldn't be
coming back to him to give him a chance to beat someone else's price,
so he had to give me his absolute low-ball price right there. In
general, it is better to buy from a large dealer in a major city, as
they are used to doing high volume and are happy to make $300.00 on a
car rather than lose a customer altogether. Smaller dealers rely on
getting the best price they can, rather than volume, to make money, so
they are less inclined to bargain.

Sounds good. And I see they list incentive programs, which should
be helpful. I have a number of prices from Kelley, NADA and the sites
of the dealers themselves, so I do have something to compare it to.
And I feel stupid not remembering "dealer invoice". I know that term;
I guess I'm just starting to feel the effect of not sleeping well
since I was injured. Thanks much for this, and the negotiting idea.
