OT: car repai rantr... |
I moved to New York a year after buying my Saturn Station wagon in
California.
I turned into my street, and both the check engine and service lights
came on, at the same time as a very clunky shift when I pressed the
accelerator pedal.
After that, the check engine stayed on, but the service light was off
for the first few miles after I started the car.
Anyway, I took it into my local AAMCO franchise, they found some
leaking seals on the transmission and serviced it (the transmission).
The diagnostic chip readout showed that a sensor needed replacing,
which they got from the nearest Saturn main dealer. Wrong one. Because
it's a California spec car. Correct one was ordered from the
warehouse. Shipped to a dealer in Larchmont while we got their parts.
Finally arrived.
Sensor replaced, diagnostics reported mixture oscillating between rich
and thin. Need more bits. These need to be shipped from California.
Driving it in the mean time, with both indicators still on until the
parts arrive today or tomorrow. Ordered Friday, should have arrived by
Tuesday.
It surprises me that they would have different parts for California.
This means changing things on the assembly line. It would have been
simpler to program the chip differently.
But don't the manufacturers realise people who buy their cars in
California ever take them with them when move to different states?
I did about 30,000 miles the first year in California and about 8,000
now. So although it's 7 years old it has only done 80,000. So it
doesn't need replacing for a while.

california has their own (stricter) smog laws....what do you expect?
that car companies would make all their cars comply with the
california laws? just because it would be the right thing to do?
no....they go to a lot of trouble to barely meet whatever regulations
are in effect where the car is sold.

It means they have to change the assembly line. And it means that
spares on the East Coast for California spec cars aren't readily
available.

Sometimes it's both: a single type of PROM is burned to two
different specifications (for piston timing advance,
fuel/air ratio, etc.), one for California and one for the
rest of the country. But the part numbers are different.

They had to order different sensors. But what really bugged me is that
they had to ship one 3000 miles from California instead of having it
in state.
As if people never move from California bringing their cars with them.
