So what's the big deal? Maybe they're trying assess the "diversity" of the
reporters covering them. You know, checking to see whether there should be
Affirmative Action to get more Asian coverage...

Sure Fred. Maybe you can spin this one too - Cheney required
reporters to sign a loyalty oath before they were admitted to a press
conference. To make matters worse it was ungrammatical. Basically a
reporter had to swear that they were voting for Jr for the "United
States". First I've heard that we elected people to be "the United
States". Who does Cheney think he is? Dubya?
All kidding aside, how dare that little ***** Cheney demand that
members of the press sign a loyalty oath to Bush before allowing them
to cover the news? The man is a fascist.

Apparently the Republicans sent a bunch of operatives to a Kerry
speech to disrupt things. Then they became paranoid that the
Democrates would do the same thing. (They didn't. They don't play
dirty like you Republicans do.) So their paranoia led them to demand
a loyalty oath.

Like I said. I got a detail or two wrong. However this was *not "a
party for Cheney". It was a speech. Given by the Vice President.
How surprised should he have been that some of the citizens of this
country, that *weren't Republicans, might want to know what he was
thinking/saying? Is this government only representative of those
belonging to the party?

So what's the big deal? Maybe they're trying assess the "diversity" of
the reporters covering them. You know, checking to see whether there
should be Affirmative Action to get more Asian coverage...

Sure Fred. Maybe you can spin this one too - Cheney required reporters to
sign a loyalty oath before they were admitted to a press conference. To
make matters worse it was ungrammatical. Basically a reporter had to
swear that they were voting for Jr for the "United States". First I've
heard that we elected people to be "the United States". Who does Cheney
think he is? Dubya?

I was in *hysterics. "Herby?" How does one "herby?"
And "for reelection of the United States?" I did not know the country
itself could hold office. What happens if the United States is not
reelected?

All kidding aside, how dare that little ***** Cheney demand that members
of the press sign a loyalty oath to Bush before allowing them to cover
the news? The man is a fascist.

Hell, it wasn't even just journalists. Apparently you just can't attend a
Cheney rally without (getting in the spirit of things) use singing the oaf
of loyalty.
Which leads to the question of doesn't that mean you're barring the
undecided voters you need for, heh, reelecting the United States?

When asked for a reason, Cheney's rep said it was because the FBI
needed more the information to discerne reporters with the same name
apart to do background checks. (kind of forgetting they had asked for
ssn's too). The name of the reporter in question was Mamta Popat.
Apparently they think this is a common name.
I suppose you think this reasoning showed great leadership too.

In what way, shape or form do you mistakenly believe
"affirmative action" to be similar to Cheney's demands?
Unless the only "journalists" allowed in where those
that Cheney was hiring, there is no "affirmative action"

I didn't say that. Quit putting words into my text.
If you were the photographer and they had asked for your religion for
no good reason, wouldn't you think that they were looking to see if
you were Christian enough?
There was no reason to ask for race. They gave no good reason for it
when asked. They asked for no one else's race. It was an
unreasonable request that appeared to be racist.

The Cheney campaign demanded to know the "race" of a
newspaper photographer before they would credential her
to cover a campaign event in Tucson.

So what's the big deal? Maybe they're trying assess the

"diversity"

of the reporters covering them. You know, checking to see
whether there should be Affirmative Action to get more Asian
coverage...

When asked for a reason, Cheney's rep said it was because the
FBI needed more the information to discerne reporters with the
same

name

apart to do background checks. (kind of forgetting they had
asked for ssn's too). The name of the reporter in question
was Mamta Popat. Apparently they think this is a common name.

I suppose you think this reasoning showed great leadership
too.

What, that the FBI wanted to do a background check?

No, obviously.

Oh, right, there was a box on a "background check request form"
maked "race" and somebody asked what to put in it?

You aren't following the conversation and make no sense.

The "conversation" makes no sense to begin with. Why is somebody
getting their panties in a twist over a question about some
reporter's race?

Apparently you have never felt discriminated against.

Huh? For being asked what race to put on a form? In this age of
"diversity" questionnaires and Affirmative Action requiring that
information all the time?

I didn't say that. Quit putting words into my text.

If you were the photographer and they had asked for your religion for
no good reason, wouldn't you think that they were looking to see if
you were Christian enough?

That would depend upon what they did after I answered. At least if I
were being reasonable instead of looking for reasons to be offended.

There was no reason to ask for race. They gave no good reason for it
when asked. They asked for no one else's race. It was an
unreasonable request that appeared to be racist.

Who else applied that hadn't already had a background check by the FBI?

According to Fred, when it comes to the Shrub administration *nothing*
is 'unreasonable.'
