OT: Computer Sale Advice! |
So I have this G4 Cube running OS 9.2.
40GB HDD, and usual for that kind of machine.
Having, much against my better judgment just bought a G5, do you think
it's worth flogging the Cube on eBay or similar? If so what do you
think I'd get? Enough to make it worthwhile? Or should I keep it "just
in case"?
Your thoughts welcome.

Machines that can boot from OS 9 are very popular nowadays, since many
people (myself included) hate OS 10, and Apple is making only one
machine that still boots from 9, and they may be gone by now. I would
start with a high price and see what happens; you can always sell it
for less.
Personally, I am keeping my old Power Tower Pro not just as a back-up
but because it boots from 9. I wouldn't sell it for double any price
I'm likely to get for it.

I've never got into this Apple vs MS debate but as far as most people's use of a
PC goes, does it do the business - ie Web browsing, email, Office, digital TV,
streaming, wireless networking etc.
Having played with one at John Lewis recently I was impressed by the looks and
quality, but I notice they still have old one-button mouse, albeit with a scroll
wheel these days - is that a handicap?

Well, I think it's horses for courses. For some video things a Mac is
the only choice, as with print layout and so on. Generally I choose my
machines based on the apps I want to run, hardware support etc. Which
is why I got the G5: it's the only thing that you can run some kinds
of video processing software on: SGI import and so on.
Mind you, when I get rich I want a Silicon Graphics box. Alas it may
be a while....
but as far as most people's use of a
PC goes, does it do the business - ie Web browsing, email, Office, digital TV,
streaming, wireless networking etc.
Sure. The breadth of hardware/software you get on a PC leaves a Mac
standing, bearing in mind that whether this is important depends on
what you want to do.
Having played with one at John Lewis

Nah, you can plug in any USB mouse, more or less. With as may buttons
as you want.

You can get a programmable two-button with scroll wheel mouse from
Logitech for $30.00 or less. The ones from Kensington have even more
buttons. If you're into Ist person shooter games like Medal of Honor a
3 button laser mouse is a necessity. Otherwise, having a programmable
mouse with different settings for different programs is a real bonus on
a Mac, but not an absolute necessity.
One of my beefs with OS 10 is that I can't program my mouse to use
individualized settings for different programs as I can with OS 9.
Apple should have fixed this shortcoming, as well as a hundred others,
with OS 10 by now. They've now gone into Microsoft mode and are
refusing to give people what they want, like the application switcher
menu, Apple menu and other cool features from OS 9. I often can't
install things without running into that "permissions needed" crap even
after fixing the permissions.
If Windows was a rip-off of the Mac, Apple has returned the favor with
OS 10.

You'll get basic scroll & right-mouse behaviour without the
software.
With the software, you'll be lucky if you can click /anything/.
Which makes uninstalling it fun, since you /must/ click on a

Thanks for the warning and the advice on USB Overdrive. I didn't have

I should have known I was in for trouble, just before the end of
the s/w install it asked me which Logitech keyboard I had; 'none'
wasn't an option :-/
The ReadMe also concentrated on keyboards, but did mention it was
for mice and other pointing devices too.

Back when I was using Macs regularly, I never thought so. Definitely the
user interface was more consistent than the systems which use two button
set ups (including the GUIs on Linux, trying to remember what the right
mouse button does *this time is a PITA here too).

I've never got into this Apple vs MS debate but as far as most
people's use of a PC goes, does it do the business - ie Web
browsing, email, Office, digital TV, streaming, wireless

I'm using a tower version of a slightly slower machine of the same
vintage. Wireless networking would require an add-on [not exactly
standard in 2001]. Digital TV likewise, I think (dunno, I'm not
into TV). DVD player on board. Web and Office, yep, not a problem.
[Office being your only likely source of malware aimed at the mac
(and executable on the mac). Oh, provided you turn off CD-ROM
autoplay. The ancient "Disinfectant" (free) will get anything else
(except macro viruses).]
It can be upgraded to the current version of OS X. [may require
more memory... Therion?] Which is what I'd advise, as OS 9 s/w is
getting harder to find.
If you need a particular Windows app and there is no Mac(/unix)
equivalent/substitute, then you can always run a Windows emulator.
Having played with one at John Lewis recently I was impressed by
the looks and quality, but I notice they still have old

I've never found them a handicap. I bought my first ever
multi-button mouse last week [I've owned various Macs since 1985],
on price more than the 'need' for 2 buttons. Since most software
assumes a single-button mouse, but allows for other input devices,
a snigle-button mouse isn't a handicap.
Don't think Apple make a scroll-wheel mouse.
3rd party USB devices (generally speaking) 'just work'.

It's not a handicap but does require at least one extra key strokes and if
after about ten minutes with a scroll wheel you have to use a mouse that
does not have one, it is frustrating - and embarassing if they see you
stroking the mouse with your index finger....

It's not a handicap but does require at least one extra key strokes and if
<shrug> since I tend to need other key combinations anyway (shift,
option, command), adding control to the list isn't a huge ask :-)

Heh, a friend has recently remarked that I seem to have become
'very fond of my "clitoris" mouse'. But I still find myself using
ctrl-left-click, and the scroll bars instead of right-mouse and
scroll wheel. And I've found a few apps that don't support the
wheel. Also I tend to work on other people's machines, so I use a
variety of pointing devices, tablets are the only thing I don't
like much.
Looks as though I'll have to practice left-hand only though, I
think I've fractured something in/near my right wrist :-(

Just in case. Or you might watch what G4 prices on EBay are,
and see if its worth the while. If the prices are high enough
you can sell and buy peripherals you want, that might be the
way to go.

40GB HDD, and usual for that kind of machine.
Having, much against my better judgment just bought a G5, do you think
it's worth flogging the Cube on eBay or similar? If so what do you
think I'd get? Enough to make it worthwhile? Or should I keep it "just
in case"?
Your thoughts welcome.
My brother paid some $$$ on ebay for a G4 a year or two ago,
so maybe it's worth at least searching the completed ebay
auctions to see what it would bring. The longer you wait,
the less it's worth.
Although in general we use computers till they're fully
depreciated, then they sit around in my collection...along
with the scores of other peoples' fully depreciated
computers. Visit the Selectric Typewriter Museum to see
what I mean.

Well, it would more than pay for an iPod 40GB...
unless you have a use for an older machine (e.g.
an iTunes console for your living room?)
OTOH I could keep it for you, just in case ;-)
