I watched this clip on Comedy Central with my wife tonight. I had to
google it up, even if just to see it without all the censorship. What do
you guys think?
Is Dane Cook really a Catholic? Or is he one of us caricaturing an atheist
as seen by a Catholic?
Or is he just making people laugh for money?

Dunno, and dunno if it matters, on a couple of levels.
When he's funny, he just is, so he has the intelligence for that, whatever he's
really thinking. But being a Catholic (unless you're dumb or a fuckhead) and
having some educated distance from church is a little like being an atheist,
anyway. If you went to a halfway-decent Catholic school, they taught you most
of what you need to know to find your way to atheism. If I had to bet, my money'd
be on Catholics to be the highest-represented religion of origin among atheists who
used to be theist.

I guess so, or he'd be looking for a new job. Actually, I didn't find
him as funny as the big crowd did.

I don't think he's an atheist.

Worst part is that he telegraphs the "punch line" (such as it is) the
minute he tells you the atheist believes that he comes back as a tree.

He's a comedian, his job is to look for absurdities and ridicule them.

Please show me a comedian who does not steal from other comedians, I have
heard a lot of comedians over the years talk about this and it is readily
admitted by most that it is endemic. I think the one who was the most honest
about it was Uncle Milty, though George Burns was pretty close behind him.
I happen to enjoy both the Stooges and the Marx Brothers, several times I
have seen both do the same skit in various films or TV shows. (I have no idea
who stole from whom, but it was certainly some other comedy group from even
earlier.)
Comedy, like most fiction, is mostly stealing from the past, filing off the
serial numbers and reissuing under your own name.
So I really don't see a charge of theft of comedy material as holding any
weight.

Carlos Mencia is a pseudo-Mexican who uses that as an excuse for politically
incorrect lame comedy. It gets a rise out of people just because it's
shocking, but not nearly as funny as Dave Chapelle.
